A friend who bought my mate's old VK has fallen victim to being an attractive young girl with no idea about cars. She's been through three mechanics and been ripped each time. So she finally thought to ask someone who knows. Haha.
Trouble is, i can recommend a good mechanic or fix a carb but i've not much idea on the VK EFI's intricacies, haha. Before i send her off to spend more money, was hoping we could troubleshoot.
After solving her alternator problem (where a mechanic was calling a broken suppressor a "solenoid" and claiming it caused the alternator to drain the battery) her car's not idling well (spluttering at what sounds like no more then 550rpm!), despite having been "tuned".
I had a quick look and the "mechanic" just wound the throttle stop screw as far as possible to try force an idle.
Does the VK run a TPS? If this is out, or malfunctioning, it would explain a lot. When i get my hands on the car i'm fully expecting it to die if i back the screw off.
Things to look for?

But it runs fin off idle?
There is a bypass screw on the airflow meter above the air cleaner, muck around with its adjustment to see if you can increase the idle speed with that.
Whats its fuel consumption like?

Peter, you've been to my workshop. We can repair that problem.
You might think we only repair older cars, but we are probably the most experience EFI workshop in Sydney. Most of our customers are other workshops.
Dr Terry.

Terry, i remember discussing that with you, about your EFI experience. Rest assured i mention your shop to anyone who i think could benefit. So, anyone! Haha. Sadly there's no way i could convince this girl to take the car out to you. She's disturbingly "local". I'll see if i can get my hands on it and go for a drive though. Would be nice to pop in and say hi too. Cheers.
Fast EH, cheers, i'll give it a go. From what she can relate to me it runs fine elsewhere but asking her even basic questions leads to miniscule info at best.

for a cheap quick fix try a tin of that spray in throttle body cleaner, I did on mine and it (surprisingly) made a difference to how the car ran. probably a bit too simple though.
