I`m thinking about replacing the mast in my elec antenna ,the motor seems to work but it no longer retracts.
I have never removed one from a commodore so how much of a job is it to get out? and has anyone replaced the mast and do they come apart easy?

The aftermarket aerials are junk. Keep the original one. If it's buggered, you can often get them at wreckers from any VT-VZ with a power aerial, and with a broken mast, they are cheap-as.

If yours is only a bent or broken mast, buy the mast kit (Aerpro AP250 from memory) & fit it - it's easy.

To fit the new mast to your aerial (or to remove & replace the whole aerial):

You'll need to remove the kick panel trim, and get in behind the guard liner, and there's a nut & bolt through the passenger kickpanel area that retains it.

unplug the wires & pop the grommett out to drop the aerial down out of the plastic guard moulding, and remove it from the vehicle.

Fitting the new mast:

To make it work outside the car, hook the black wire (or metal bracket) to a 12V negative terminal - leave it connected.
Now touch both the red and white wires to the 12V+ terminal to make it go up (remove them to stop it). Touch just the red wire to drop it down.

Undo the tip of the aerial to remove the old mast & rope (which is really a nylon cord with teeth along it). You may still need to undo the case to get any broken bits of "rope" out of it. You will need to connect power to "raise" the aerial up to extract the rope. It won't come all the way out, so you need to grab hold of it, and touch just the red wire a few times to lower it a bit (holding the rope against the clutch that will click). Then go "up" again to free the whole rope.

Line up the new rope with the teeth against the gear, and touch the red wire to go "down" to engage it & draw it in. Once you get it to engage a fair way, fit the tip back on (the aerial will still be somewhat extended) and tighten it down, to retain the mast.
Apply power to both red & white to 'rasie' it to it's highest setting - it will go "clack clack clack" as it hits the clutch at the end of it's travel, but that sets it perfectly (syncs the mast & drum), so when you apply power to just the red, it will lower to the bottom & stop when it gets there.

See how you go - some of the car stuff you've posted about on here suggests this will be a walk in the park for you.

Any questions, just ask.

Cheers,

Mick

If you remove the antenna bezel from the guard you can remove and refit without taking the liner or the complete assembly out . very rare that mast nylon breaks , it usualy the teeh wearing off .It was more the old vb commo antennas that broke . once the bezel is off undo the top cap and turn the ignition on the mast with some help from you will run out . fit the end of the new mast in slip the cap back on turn off the ignition and it will run itsef down , if it still sit up slightly just repeat the on and off sequence and just apply slight pressure to the top of the antenna when running back down . i have done heaps this way in my panel beating trade .

Thanks guys, the antenna is stuck up at present and the motor can be heard operating, it was working up until about a year ago. The car is a 50th Anniversary model in good cond so I like all the accessories to work.
