Sorry Dave,
not right, this ia a very vague question.

LC "S" models had black, GTR's and XU-1's as you say had silver, but this could also vary between Adelaide and Brisbane.

The last 73 XU-1's had silver for Adelaide and Black from Brisbane built XU-1s this also applies to the last GTR's.

True true Mike and we need to know iuiw gtr, xu1, torana s etc. I do belive that Brisbane LC XU1 s had a gold tinge to the silver. Not 100% sure though. If it is an XU1 with original fan blade it should match that. Not sure about gtrs though. Cheers Dave

Hi Guys.

I doubt that the silver colour (or tint) would vary from assembly plant to assembly plant as all the caps would have surely been painted where they were made (at the engine plant maybe ??).

I was always of the belief that the oil cap was painted silver simply to match the chrome plated rocker cover. Stockers (S & SL etc.) have had the black vented cap sitting on the red rocker cover since the EH days. GTRs & XU-1s uniquely had a chrome plate rocker cover with the silver cap to match. This changed around Sept 1973 when the '3-hole' rocker was introduced with the sealed oil cap. To my knowledge all the sealed caps in those days were painted red, matching the rocker cover. These late GTRs lost their chrome rocker cover, silver oil cap & even the chrome air cleaner, so they looked very much like the S & SL motors. These are very rear, I've only ever sighted 2 of them. These changes in the oil vent set-up were to comply with the upcoming ADR27.

Why late Brisbane XU-1s got a black (if indeed they actually did) is as bit of a mystery. Maybe GM-H simply ran out of silver caps & used up the excess stock of black caps that were no longer required for the stockers, because of the intro of ADR27.

Hi again,
yes Aug 73 GTR's had a silver fan to match the silver cap, and I agree I recon that the silver cap was to match the rocker cover.
Monaro 186S had the gold cap and air cleaner.

I have not seen a later GTR to know what combination they had.
I have also wondered if the black caps were just replacement ones someone fitted, It could be one of the many myths peddled by certain motoring writers, one who has the name Ken must have set some sort of a record for starting myths on Toranas as he has many things in the public domain that are simply Bull S**T

I can also be reasonably sure that the wiring harness was superseeded for 1974 GTRs and had better clearance for the extractors as would have been introduced for XU-1's if they had been made later.
I have one of these on my GTR and it easily clears the Perry extractors that I have fitted.

Mike
