It looks like Judas Gillard is getting what she asked for. A backlash of angry voters who liked Kevin Rudd.

How does Saudi arabia run things? do all of their countries residents benefit from the profits of what is under their dirt?

We should all benefit a lot more from what is under our dirt than we do instead of most of the money going to some rich and often overseas owned company.

Remember it was going to be a super profits tax not a tax on all profits but the mining companies had people believing via their unions that it was going to make the rich companies poor therefore everyone else.

Pity Bill Shorten, Julia Gilard and Mark Arbib didn't lose their seats.

I usually vote Labor but not this time I don't think a lot of the mad monk either.

The billionaire who just about runs the mining industry in this country is also a life member of the Liberal party, you should be able to get the drift from there.

interesting this debate on mining tax?
my thoughts are>> [and please correct me if i have not understood the issue[
the mnerals are ours,
the miners invest squillons, and get back a return on their risk and investment, which is a bg risk,
they pay royalties to the states,
and then company tax on their profits, the same as we all pay tax on income,
what was proposed was an extra tax on them after they made profits more than 6%, equalling approx 30%.
therefore they would end up effectvely paying about 50>60% of tax?
in return the gov, [taxpayer[ was gong to guarantee them should their project fail,
off course this was irrelevant, cause most mines would not start, unless they were dang sure the mine was viable.
so they decided not to invest in aus, cause not worth the return nor risk,
so they will move to ghana, zimbarbwe, argentina, etc, and other safer places to invest.
we as a country lose big time.
i know i would not like the gov to suddenly say we want 30% of any money you have left over after you have paid your bills, and want to save and put n the bank, includng from the previous years as well?
maybe my take on this is wwroo,,,,rroooonngg,,,,wron,,,,,
still cant say it.
cheers

p.s/ it was jg/swan who did a secret deal with the 3 big miners? to shut them up,
whos supporting big business here??

Some merit in that statement, also the damage was big in NSW & QLD where the state governments stink could've been that as well. They were always going to lose some seats because things settle back after a landslide.

I listened to the independents last night, straight shooters I thought. The Greens? time will tell.

Who knows, this could be a good thing.

How good would it be for the Independants to pick a leader and go to the 2 x parties and say:

Here's the deal. [for example] Tony Windsor will be PM, who wants to be deputy, Julia or Tony?

Do you think either would take it?

You gotta laugh at the media and the way they put governments in and out. Today they are saying that Abbott is a Howard clone and doesn't understand economics, first thing he will do is chop into Labor's social programs, ie school & hospital funding yadayadayada...

The media have once again manipulated public opinion to almost get the desired result and are now saying gee Australia you've stuffed up as if they had nothing to do with it.

The rest of the western world is apparently shaking their heads, how does the only government who dodged the worldwide recession bullet and continue to have a booming economy whilst keeping interest rates and unemployment down get the flick because of waste, mismanagement and overspending.

We deserve a hung parliament and I hope that in the future people might actually look at their own situation before believing anything they read or hear in the media.

I was thinking that myself. I suppose Labor would take them up on it with their "Stay in power at all costs" philosophy.

That would probably be the best outcome.

well after lstenng to the tree amigos,
my thoughts are as follows>>
oakshot>> idealist, no understanding of the vast political divide..eg
one party wants centralist control, to benifit from the output of the masses
one party wants freedom for the masses to benifit from the output of the masses,
which one produces a better output>>>?? you can all argue on which.

katter>> has own private list of wants, very narrow focused reminds me of a leftist greenie only from the country.

and mr windsor seems a very good mature wordly polly, but i believe he has hinted already that we may be giong back to the polls,

cant see any of them working with the checkout chick,
and tony rabbit is one tough hombre, we will see whether it will descend into kaos!!!
i think we need the cone of silence!! chief",
cheers

The media is a funny thing isn't it? The world may be shaking their heads, but Labor inherited a huge surplus which is 95% of the reason why Australia avoided a recession. I think the majority of voters agree in general that using that surplus to stimulate the economy was a wise and sensible action, but I believe people aren't silly and saw how badly bungled the spending packages really were - Education revolution, Insulation for homes etc. All good things in principle but VERY badly managed by an en experienced bunch. Couple that with how the Labor party truly looked in its dumping off Rudd and people weren't happy, that has been reflected in the election non-result.

I honestly don't think there is any way out when you only have 2 x parties, you don't like one and you are pissed with the other. So you vote elsewhere and the vote ends up in most cases with one of the 2 x parties eg Green vote = Labor vote. Personally I'm stuck in an electorate where just about everyone are sheep and all vote Labor so we get NOTHING.
