We are continueing to improve the whole thing, but you can get a hold of the criteria that we use and then look from there.

The judges look at parts of the ca that many glance over, making it difficult for some to see why a car won. It is not about picking the most popular or recognisable, its about finding the car that best fits the criteria, and the Concours class this year Nick's was the best entered.

Paul has a copy of the criteria and if he wishes to fix the parts on his car that do not fit the criteria then he can, as can anyone else for that matter.

The biggest problem with restored Monaros is the top spec cars have always been "expected" to win over the "lower" spec cars. But I am yet to see a how luxury level and options has anything to do with originallity.

Warren
The logical question then is how/where does everyone else find this criteria?
Was'nt Nicks car also the winner of several other similar events?
Is the "criteria" used worldwide or brought forward by a localised contingency set of rulings?
Is there a "criteria" book for becoming a judge?
Are the judges rotated, or is it always same hat?
Is there any way the judging can be swayed or bought?
If you trust the current system, why?
Should a "peoples choice" award be included?
Please don't be offended by my questions, I just feel that greater transparency and better communication is usually always the key to more truth, growth and stronger relations. I do realise there is a lot of money at stake, as a car judged a winner at an event in a particular category is almost certainly assured of increase in value.
Which brings me back to the winning car again. If a better more original unknown car should appear would judges get a case of better the devil you know, than to turn around and perhaps get it all wrong with what could be a forgery?
Thanks in advance Warren, Regards, Erik

Erik... I cant tell you about any criteria or judging...but I can give you some history on nicks HK base model... yes it has won concourse at the last 3 nationals but the car has improved each and every nationals... the main difference between nicks car and a lot of others is what the car was when he bought it some 9 or 10 years ago... It was a genuine 39,000 mile 1 owner car that had been largely untouched all its life... when he got it there was only some minor crows feet on the top of both rear quarters... the gent that owned it died about 10 year prior to nick buying it and when found it hadnt been out of the shed since... the interior as you see it is largely unrestored... the trim, carpet, headlining console are all as delivered in the vehicle... only minor cosmetic improvements to the dash have been made...and the steering wheel (dont start me on the steering wheel dramas at loxton.... from that you can guage the quality of the car when nick bought it...

before nick started a concours resto he took literally hundred of photos and made pages of notes on things like what bolts/washers were zinc coated and which were painted... where the paint marks were and what colours were where... yes the paint marks were still on the car and he has the photos to prove it... nearly all the part that have been changed are genuine NOS straight out of the box... Nick stripped and painted the car himself.... the body alone was hand finished over a 6 month period.... and this was a car that started out needing bugger all bodywork....

now let me tell you about Nick... the guy is a freak when it comes to his car.... he took a full week off work prior to the warwick nationals to get it ready.... he loaded the car onto his truck at 4pm on Thursday, just over 24 hours from the close of scrutineering in warwick... after recovering from a blowout and with just 2 1/2 hours sleep on the side of the road at deepwater 100klm south of warwick he rolled into the B&B where he was staying at 6am in the morning.... he immediately unloaded the truck and started detailing the car... all day friday he spent under it, inside it and head under the bonnet... I can tell you at 4pm on friday with 1 hour before scrutineering was to close the car still didnt have a grill and radiator in the car.... why were they out of the car... well you cant clean the bloody thing properly with them in he snapped... so after rolling in to scrutineering with about 15 minutes and being totally disgusted that he hadnt had time to wash the car.. the car was officially entered in the 2010 nationals.... so after about 40 minutes chatting to people at the showground he drove the beigemobile back to the B&B and recommenced the parts of the car he hadnt had time to detail during the day.... at just after midnight and with just 2 1/2 hours sleep in the previous 48 hours including a drive of about 1000klm the guy finally had a sleep.... but wait... the car still hadnt been washed... so what did he do... set his alarm for 4.30am and took the car to carlovers for a wash and then back to the B&B for its final polish and chrome work detail prior to taking it to the showground around 8.30 saturday morning...

I guess what im trying to point out is that it takes far more than a car with a big engine and a heap of nos parts and a shiny new paint job.... a concours resto and a cars presentation for judging says more about the bloke that owns it than the car itself... nick is damn proud of his car as he should be...

people do shake their head at how a bloody base model can be the concours champion 3 nationals running.... but it doesnt surprise me one bit....

and finally to all those that think the car is all show... find the group of guys we went on a cruise to the falls with on sunday once the drags were off.... here it was pissing with rain and we are in a line of cars with a beautiful aquamarine LS350 coupe in front of him... when he puts the bloody foot down and screams past the 350 at nearly 90mph... original dunlops and all... the look of WTF on the people in the LS 350 was hilarious.... and the picardy red 327 was eating dust behind....

anyway... i know i have rambled on abit but I just wanted to set the record straight about the beigemobile and its owner and what it will take to present a car that can beat it at a nationals... you see you just dont have to beat the car... you have to beat the owner as well...

cheers
Al

Al , Nicks car is stunning no matter whether a 327 or a 6 . Its the workmanship thats what its all about .
I actually got pretty excited about all the Nasco Memorabilia and signs, i doubt even any of the early Holden guys could top that . Full marks to him for his tenacity in collecting and swapping NOS parts with people all over Australia over the last few decades to make it what it is and of course starting with a great car .
Its always been a lot harder to find a good V8 GTS to start with also , so many of the other cars he competes against will have had many repairs , and monaros dont take well to being massaged due to their complex shapes .

So with that fact he is ahead of the game already , plus he has had years to improve his car which makes it a pretty hard one to beat. Doubt he will be doing much painting any time soon though , since his bowling career is going so well !!! LOL
The better any of these cars are the more (the public) focuses in on the few deficiencies , rather than the 98% of good things the cars possess .
It seems to be human nature that people do this i have found .
Anyway its a credit to all for getting cars to the nationals , no matter who wins or loses , its a tough road to restore one of these old buses , and a constant work in progress to get cars to a higher standard .
"No one is perfect... that's why pencils have erasers"
Lets get back to having fun with these cars i say , as life it to short .
I am retiring to be a Philosopher , how am i going so far, LOL !!!

Thanks Al! That should do it, I'm good now.
If Nick had to do all that to one car, imagine how much sleep he would get trying to do three?
Congratulations to Nick for the award deservedly bestowed to him and his very special car.
Still, I can't help but feel slightly disappointed and embarrassed that judges this year never had an ovation or even a mention for someone getting 3 great cars into the event. I guess if it's any consellation to Paul Kelly, it would be his three cars will always be remembered as the "trio" that shook the s*** out of Warwick.
Sounds like he certainly made Nick work for his trophy.
Hope they both read these postings, and see for themselves how their cars have ignited so many enthusiasts passions for these cars.
Thank you Paul and Nick, you guys are f***en great!!
(apologise for the swearing here, could'nt help it though)

I shall try to answer your questions.
The logical question then is how/where does everyone else find this criteria?

Modified judging uses the ASMF criteria, available from them. The stock judging uses the judging sheets developed by me for the 2000 event, and have been used at all nationals since except Ballarat. They were available for many years on my web site and have been made available to anyone who wanted them. I advertised that I would send them to anyone who wanted them here also.
Was'nt Nicks car also the winner of several other similar events?
Yes
Is the "criteria" used worldwide or brought forward by a localised contingency set of rulings?

The stock judging is not used world wide, but is acepted here in the Monaro nationals

Is there a "criteria" book for becoming a judge?

No

Are the judges rotated, or is it always same hat?

We use to ask for judges to come forward from the Monaro clubs, this time we had no reponse (but several said they wanted to so something went wrong) so a panel of Monaro experts was put together by Ben Stewart.
Is there any way the judging can be swayed or bought?

Queensland is the best state money can buy.
If you trust the current system, why?

Yes because I developed it. Also most that see it like it, and it has been taken up, in principle by the Performance car nationals, the HDT club, and many other Holden clubs.
Should a "peoples choice" award be included?

Up to the organisers.

Also Kelvin normally enters several cars, Bryan has entered 2 cars at the last 3 events, only one this time. Just because you enter cars does not mean you have to win. There were several cars that only just made it also, my brother's car was regoed on the Wednesday and back tot eh trans shop on Thursday. Should he get a trophy for that effort?

Paul did very well, but was beaten by a better car on the day. Lets not forget the effort Nick put in to maintain his car in this condition, or the HT that was also in concurs. All three deserve a medal just for being in that class, the same as those owners that were in show class. These two are very difficult to enter and entry is an honour in itself.

I thought the trio that shook the s**t out of Warwick were the car thieves and those that broke into the shops on the main street!

FYI each of the WA entered cars, including my HG and the above mentioned HT drove to the event! Did "Mr Trio"?

Thank you Warren,
From a public viewpoint, do you think they might get the impression and perhaps the notion that (you) Warren, writes the blueprint and Ben Stewart executes it thereby not being impartial or perhaps staid?
I am referring of course to your very well known past collaboration writing the Monaro story.
Must say I agree with so many people deserve credit and mention. To try and do so would take another team writing a book though.
I really did walk away from these nationals with a trailer load of positives, and thought of the whole show as having been the best ever.
Even now after the event people such as yourself mainly, Al and James taking the time to answer a few questions surrounding the spectacle just adds another positive level to it.
Perhaps other members might find omissions or something they would like answered. They now know it's easy and approachable just ask!
Thanks Warren.
Warmest regards, Erik

Petty thieves and burglars don't rate a mention when we are talking about your special HG or any other car for that matter.
God I hope they catch those losers!
Did you enjoy the event? (whats FYI?)

FYI = For Your Info

Re the event, yes we did enjoy it. A few things could of been done better

Re not getting a mention, it was only after the entrant from Geraldton WA highlighted that they had done over 7000km that they got a passing mention.

In my opinion all trophies, except for show class should go to those cars driven to the event from the nearest capital city.

Perhaps Warren would be able to answer your question?
We drove up from Victoria, and had an absolute ball all the way.
At least we made it one piece :-)
Did you hit the Bellarineclassicautos stand at the event?
I was there helping Dave out. Met some fantastic people all day.
Unbelievable!!
A party that lasts for 5 days, still recovering. Hopefully I never will. ;-)

Taking 3 cars is probably what cost Paul in the long run... it seems that he spread himself too thin... theya re all great cars in their own right no doubt about it...

I also agree that not enough kudos is given to the show class winners and concours winners at the event... if they are the marquee classes that everyone should aspire to then make a big deal out of it.... just my opinion..

Firstly, I say that you deserve a huge compliment for driving your car across the continent to attend the Nationals.

As many of you know I trailered my Monaro four hundred Ks so by comparison I am a ppuussy.

I confirm everything Al has said about Nick....and I thought I was anal about presenting my cars.....While I was snoring, Nick was washing!

Granted, Nick did not drive his car across the continent to get there and yes it did arrive in Warwick on the back of a truck....but as usual for Nick he did not even give it a second thought when it came to driving the beige car with us in the rain at highway speed on Sunday.

I am sure you will agree with me John that when it comes to presenting the best cars of their kind in existence that it is no surprise to see them arrive on a trailer.

I have no problem with cars arriving at shows on trailers... before I owned a trailer I admittedly looked at those with trailers with a bit of envy.

Can anyone tell me if Paul drove his fantastic 307 HK to the event?

By the way Nick did the same thing at Ballarat on the Sunday after. In convoy with my car an several others he did about two hundred miles around the beautiful Ballarat and district countryside...in the rain.

Nick enjoys driving the car whenever he can and often drives to events.

He also lets the occasional boofhead drive his car too!...:

...Muscle Car Masters Eastern Creek Sep 2009.

Last year Nick drove his Monaro from Sydney to the Bruce McPhee Farm at Wyong for a Club BBQ. And he did not spare it, cruising up the freeway at 110 keeping pace with V8 Monaros and Falcon GTs alike.

John, I hope you enjoyed the Nationals and I am sorry I did not get the chance to meet you. Hopefully we can get over to your side of the country in 2012. If so I look forward to meeting you.

Nick

Ah yes, But I did see you drive it through a large amount of particularly sticky mud on the Monday. I bet there is still some in your wheel arches.

Could not believe it when I saw it.. But I thought "Good on you for driving it"

I like the NRMA decal on the passenger side quarter window. Does anyone know where I could obtain a few? I could use it on my EH panelvan and the HG panelvan.

No as i watched them push it into place. Can't have 1.8 miles on the clock if it was driven. Also when the cars had to undertake the performance test, it was evident that this was the first time it was started.

Re Nick, yeah it is great that he loves driving his car as well.
