It has come to my attention that some think I am talking about car I judged.

I was not invovled in the judging of Concours at Warwick, with the exception of the function test an one car.

This is why I cannot confirm or denny (I would not anyway) any information about why Nick's car won, other than it did win.

I have full faith in the judges decisions. I also know both cars and know that they both have faults. SOme of the suggested faults I do not agree with, but it is alearning curve for all, including myself.

I hope that clarifies the info.

Warren, can you confirm you were seen out the back of the judging tent meeting a man named Frank and loading a large quantity of gelati into the back of your car?

As I own a CV8Z it was only a small amount, it filled the boot and that is why you thought it was a large amount.

Yes after the comments on the Warwick nationals, with the "experts" putting in all that they did, with famous last words of "there will be no complaints" I do not envy you.

No matter what you do I think you will have to accept there will be this type of discussion. (they have happened after every Monaro nationals since 2000, when judging other than people's choice was introduced)

i am, by far, no expert on the criteria of judging at any of th descisions made at any monaro natts to date!! but am more than happy to assist in any way i can at your 2012 event.(yor rules of course)
with a non prejudice opinion, related to any previous nationals awards, i would like to offer my assistance in any way possible.
everyone im sure, can pick th s#*t out of any winning vehicle, easier than they can accept th judges final descision, as i did at warwick, as to later model carpet etc etc.
my crusty trusty ole pightute will do th treck regardless, to trade as always

Happy to help too if I can make it. The HJ judging sheets need a bit of work if you are using the Warwick ones, I can help iron those out if need be.

Yes I agree Byron, the judging sheets need an overhaul, I started this after the event, as many others could see that we need to refine them. Even have more of them.

However this was dismissed by some so I stoped. Do you wish to take the lead on this one?

Hi.

Just re read some of the comments in the topic.

I note Warren's comment suggesting that copies of Judging sheets be handed to entrants. I strongly agree with the this. As far as I know to date this has never been policy. I feel that if this becomes standard practice it would go a long way to helping many entrants who just shoot in the dark.

I can see that this can potentially become a tin of worms. The human element in judging means that mistakes will be made and that armed with a sheet the entrant could probably challenge judging more often and or effectively.

I feel that whilst my HK Monaro is reasonably accurate, I struggle interpereting the differing views from different (and respected) knowledgable individuals and then applying this when preparing my car. I also feel a responsibility to try to get my car accurate.

As we go forward in time there are less people around who can actually remember or state what is correct first hand. So I see getting correct and consistent judging as becoming a matter of urgency especially for Concours and factory Authentic. The "batton" of knowledge is being handed to a second (and third)generation of enthusiasts.

I wonder if it time to re think the judging system used for stock and concourse.

I am not sure what was used at Busselton, but the stock judging system was developed by myself for 2000 and has had complaints since 2004 to 2010 (was not used in 2008).

The Concourse was deveopled from it and was used in 2002 and has been questioned every time since 2006.

Even with Ben Stewart and myself being heavily involved in the judging descisions there have been nothing but complaints from the 2010 event. So if Ben and I cannot get it right with the assistance of some hand picked experts, the Brains trust as Ben called us, then who can?

The track record of this system is not good, time for a re think in my view. (yes I know I pushed it in 1998 to the Vic club, but I think its time to conceed to getting it wrong)

Hi Nick,

I believe you know what is right or wrong with your car.
Its simple mate, you either drive it and enjoy it for how you brought it, or take it to the next level.Which means making changes from the previous owners as to what was discussed at the Warwick Nationals.
You have a great car, If it was my car! I would just drive it! Other wise sell it and buy a concourse car.

Regards Joe.

yep spot on joe as i have said to nick before he has to get past what the previous owner has done to the car and move on he knows whats wrong with it to take it to the next level its as simple as that.... but if he can not then there will always be things stopping it from winning future events in original restored...

Send me photos of your car Nick to [email protected]. If you want anything pointed out that is'nt supposed to be that way I can let you know. I'm confident on most of the car but the Chev engine and its hardware arent my area of expertise. Dave Smith would be able to identify any non factory abnormalities too. I'll give it a shot for you free of charge.

The trouble with the damn things, not just Monaros but all Holdens from HK-HZ plus to a lesser extent Toranas, is they vary so much during each series and from assembly plant to assembly plant. And then try to factor that into cars with bodies hard trimmed and painted at one body plant and assembled a another (there are HK GTS's around like this). I found it hard at Warwick to simply apply the judging sheets to the HJ's, particularly the GMH TEST VEHICLE HJ LS as it was such an early car which means a lot of late HQ stuff is correct, yet this car wasn't sold until emissions stuff came into play hence it had the canister, sealed carby and fuel tank, vapour line to the canister etc. Yet it had the early inner guards and other such engine bay bits. Trying to apply these sheets to something like HJ-HZ Sandmans would be a head f$%# as utes and vans from assembly plants are so different due to the bodies originating at different body plants. I've also noticed how different my Acacia Ridge HK GTS327 is to a Pagewood car or a Dandenong or Elizabeth car, and it makes sense they should be as they were built very differently. So I don't envy those trying to do concours judging, and worse still trying to build a car to the required standard!

Hi.

To Simon, Byron, Ben ,Bullitt LJ, Warren, Joe, Dave. Thankyou all for your interest, offers and help.

Simon, Both of my computers are off being fixed so will get some pix to you asap Thanks.

Dave Smith spent several hours climbing over and under my car and also getting heaps of pics.....No hiding from Dave now he has so many pics! He promised to follow up with advice which I look forward to!

Joe. Since our conversation I have been chipping away at bringing my car up to speed accuracy wise and have made some good progress. My aim is either "Contemporary" where is presently sits best and/ or "Factory Authentic".
I took many photos and notes of the HKs at Warwick Nats and along with ongoing tips from Ben I feel that it will eventually become a good "Authentic " category car.

Bullitt LJ. I take your comments on board and thank you for them. I have a strong friendship with Steve Clark (previous owner) and Jeff Brown's wife. I recently took the car to Sydney and during the visit I took the car to her and their daughter. She still has many photos, trophies and other items from Jeff's time with the car. Jeff was a founding member of the NSW Monaro Club. Jeff had MANY friends in the Monaro Club and I don't mind being regularly reminded of that when one of them speaks with me. I understand from Ben and others that this car was car of the day at the First Monaro Nationals. It is significant that the car still achieves awards at Nationals (not W.A) and other major events (The most recent being a "Car of the Day" award at the 2012 NSW All Holdens Day in Sydney) some 15 years after being restored. It is also noteworthy that the car is virtually untouched since Jeff's initial work. So I feel that I need to respect all of that including Steve Clark's meticulous attention during his ownership.

I don't know of too many Monaros which were in the same condition as Jeff's car in 1998 and are in as good condition as it is today without any major work.

I really enjoy driving the car occasionally but I have others which I drive very often.

I only wish it was possible for me to attend the 2012 Nats.

Cheers Guys.

Nick,

You may have missed the 2012 Nats, but now is the time to start planning getting the HK to the 2014 Nats in the South Australian Barrossa Valley.

the SA Nats committee is basing their event around the very successful Loxton 2006 event profile with a few tweaks. Will also have a new driving event that has never been done at a Nationals before. So it should be a ripper.

Stay tuned for more info as it is released.
