I'll think you'll find that we here in the West are buying all the top dollar cars and the majority of parts are heading West as well.

And so is the Monaro nationals circus, perhaps this is the reason why?

maybe so as well, but your still 25yrs to late, we had them before they were trendy we are the real enthusiasts, we raced them, wrecked them, modified them restored them back after years of FUN with them, did the hard yards getting the bits that were impossible to get even then and had heaps MORE FUN WITH THEM and made some life long friends from them that were more interested in helping rather than judging and arguing the point about correctness etc that is more than any of you current guys ever will have, and thats what its all about.

oh did someone mention fun with cars???

My point exactly "you had them" we now have them!

FYI i have plenty of fun in all my cars and with family in tow. Our recent trip to the Nationals was an example of that.

We too have made plenty of friends through these cars and also have enjiyed chasing teh parts down. Having a fat wallet has helped somewhat.

I am happy that i don't have a 'correct' 100 point car as it gets taken out of the shed regularly for a cruise along the coast or a night at the drives.

West or East I don't give a rats about where you live or who can afford what.
I just love the cars and the people generally and I am having a great time at this stage of my life.

If it is a $2k klunker or a one hundred pointer I am interested.

I have a mix of cars in the shed at any time.

At the moment I am playing around with a $1000 XC V8 Fairmont and I am loving it. I am cutting some rust out and doing some mechanical repairs.... great fun.

When it is finished I'll even get to cruise a little in her before I sell it. Fantastic!

100 pointers are great. A lot of people look at my Red Monaro and think wow it would be great to own that. But I have to tell you it can be painful. Can't drive them too much. Can't park them out of sight, have to look for 100% perfect parts, has to be correct etc.
You can get just as much if not more enjoyment from just owning a good old school car which is in average to good contition with a fraction of the worry!

Any way, I am way off topic.

A category at this year's Nationals I was (as many of you would know) most interested in was HK Factory authentic.
I know my car has some issues within this category I will publicly state that the old Red warhorse could have done well in that category. What are your opinions?
Also do you think I should concentrate on bringing it more into line with this category for future Nationals or should I preserve it and simply keep freshening it up , thus keeping it the way Jeff Brown restored it?

I am in two minds about what to do with this car. It has been a very "public" car and was restored by a man widely recognised and respected within the Monaro fraternity who was the subject of a memorial trophy at this year's Nationals.

I agree with Tony about being a custodian of a car like this one rather than an owner ans as such feel some responsibility to keep it as Jeff built it. So chasing the Factory authentic category will no doubt alter it from Jeff's perception of Correct which took it across the line at the very first Nationals a Wangarratta back in 1998.
After much discussion in the lead up to Warwick I entered it in the Mild Custom Category which it won. Amazingly it is basically unaltered from the way it was presented in 1998... still winning trophies. Testament to the quality of Jeff's work and Steve Clarks meticulous care.

Any comments would be most appreciated.

Cheers
Nick Moran.

nick with all due respect to the people that built your hk 327 its not there car anymore so its up to you what you do with it!!

if you want to go for factory authentic then fix all the things that need fixing simple really!!

the way i see it only you know what you want factory authentic or not you cant keep thinking i cant do that because so and so biult it you didnt sign any contracts saying you cant do anything to the car so just do it!!

if not and you are more concerned what they would think sell it
as im starting to think thats what your going to do i may be wrong though!!

Hey Nick!

I think (and here I go again) I try and think about the reasons why GMH built these cars in the first place.
To go fast, and to go racing!
a friend of mine who has owned his warwick yellow 69 GTS since new, wanted something more back in 75 so he set about building a 350 for it.
Not just any 350, a 350M. Complete with vintage double hump fuellies, solid lifters, Holley 780DP, early Victor jnr. manifold etc. All the stuff that was available to make a 350 breathe fire back then. He then backed it up with a muncie taken from a 69 396 SS, got Phils custom steel to weld up a 2;78 HQ diff to widen the track which in turn improves the directional stability out of sight.
Gave it a coat of jam, and because he liked the GTS stripes he put them on either side L & R and put on a HT fluted bonnet and a genuine aluminium GT-HO rear spoiler. He also put a black pin stripe down the flanks following the stringer, along with the sill stripes.
Did I mention he also installed a complete genuine A/C system to this?
To say this car is tough is an understatement, it throws fire out the exhaust on start up, lifts the front wheels off the ground on take off, excess fuel dripping on the manifold, spit in its eyes, brass knuckle dusters, studded collar, chews gum. And you better move out of the way when this thing is coming down the road.
It was the toughest motor scooter in main street of our town for many years. And here is the best part,
It is still like this today!!!
It is'nt modified to the extent that you can't put it back.
Mind you the paint is cracked and dry, and everything else is in need of freshen up. But it still breathes fire and goes like s*** shot out of a shanghai.
My view to all this is go racing boy! put the driveline asside, put in a snorting 327/350/4spd/HQ diff, tape up the glass, call yourself Bruce McPhee for a day. And do what the General purpose built these beautiful machines for,, winning!
GTS= Guaranteed track & show winner. Yours has won at the show, now go get em' at the track!
I have got pictorial proof you were hanging around the Holden dealership looking for go-fast bits hehe
Have fun Nick, lotsa fun. Cause life is but short

And I love playing politics and word games here on fastlane.
But I'm right at home setting up a car, socializing over a few beers with my mates, talking cars in my garage. Hazing the hides on some deserted road with only me and a boyhood glint in the eye. Only one bit of politics then, him with the biggest kahunas, wins!
And why not do it with style, in a HK,HT or a HG. =)
So C'mon all you garage dwellers, be in the club, go to the event. Whichever, whatever? Meanwhile I'll think of an excuse to give the missus so I can go for another drive. Cya!!!

Hi Erik

Yes, Deighton Motors.....I did ask the standard question regarding new old stock and was presented with the standard reply being: " Sorry Mate, this other bloke also called Nick was here yesterday and he bought it all......got it cheap too!

"

Thanks for the comments. I just love hearing about cars like that one..... and thank God there are people out there who dare to be different!

In my case I don't need to do anything like turn it into a hot beast. I've already done that with a genuine GT I've owned since 1984. Ironically, I will be back in Warwick with it for a Morgan Park track day soon! It too breathes a bit of fire!

What I am saying about the car is that it was a pioneer on the track to where concours cars are today.
Ben Stewart and Warren informed me that this car was car of show at the first Nationals at Wangaratta back in '98.

It was a very public car achieving teems of awards for many years before my ownership. So in a way there is a kind of public ownership of the car. It is also quite uncommon for a restored car to survive fifteen plus years without a major makeover. It is in its own way a "restored survivor" (.....hmmmm ....idea for a new category???) which still achieves at national level. Not a lot to do with me really. I just park it in a dark dry room and polish the hell out of it.
So like Tony and Ben I feel more like a custodian than an owner.

In reality I did a bit of underbody detail work as the previous two owners did not have a hoist and I do. Probably mucked around under it for two months in spare time. Looks great under there too now.
