Can anyone tell me if 8 track players were options on the early Holdens? And when?

HKTG got a Optional Tape player but not an 8 track .
Many dealers would have offered them though as aftermarket accessories back then , like i had a HK Monaro with a Pianola 8 Track . Gotta love the 8 tracks .
Only decent tape i had was Booker T and the MGs !

i was looking at buying a 1974 HQ premier recently that i am fairly sure had one factory fitted...
standard item on the HX LE wasn't it?

Tuning for Holley carbs in Perth? PM me.
Old holdens brought on the spot, quick decision, cash paid.

I ask because they certainly suit the era and they most definately were a factory option on the fords at the time.

I can't believe how much money they're getting for old 8 track players now. Jeeez I wish I never threw so many of them on the tip

I got a new Aussie manufatured one, date coded 1969 complete with 4 speakers and heaps of tapes. Never been fitted to a car. Was thinking about fitting it to the HG, but won't now.

Instead it will go into the PV

ford stuff is always more expensive, always has been, always wil be, they seem to stick together more and not bag each others stuff as much.i agree, why would someone want to pay silly money for a scaled down beta video recorder that runs off 12volts???

Same deal as an FB clock.

An 8-track player offers higher fidelity along with a superior signal to noise ratio than a cassette. Access to songs is also much faster due to the configuration of the audio tracks. Beta is a far superior system to VHS as the heads employ a higher writing speed along with the method the tape is threaded around the head drum.

8 track players are not listed in the HQ accessory book but There is one listed in the HJ Statesman brochure and is the same as LE coupe.

8 tracks were available from the late 60s, but did not become a factory option until the HJ.

Many dealers did fit them for their customers.

(I challenge the Ford stuff being worth more, buy a XC GXL/GS dash and a HZ GTS dash and see which one is worth more. Even the cars, sold my mothers XC GXL with GT option pack for half the price we would have got for a 308 HZ GTS. Yes XW and XY worth heaps others worth nothing)

I have an HT Kingswood. 186, opel 4 speed with recliners, sports (GTS) dash, 6" rims etc, etc. It has an 11 transistor air chief push button radio and an eight track fitted under the dash. I am the second owner. The 8 track was dealer fitted. Its killa!

Hi Peter,

I had a look and it seems there is a thin strip on the face of the player that is missing which I reckon would say what brand/type it is. I'll have to investigate further and look underneath or at the back (or remove it) as I am curious as to what it is too. The speakers are in the parcel shelf and the car is fitted with an Air Chief 11 transistor push button radio. The car was ordered through the Smiths dealership in Port delaide from new.

The car was parked for 28 years before I got it last year. It hasnt been run or started since then and I havent done anything with it either but just stick it up the back of the shed under a car cover. I'll have another look later in the week if I remember.

Cheers Simon.

8 tracks can be brought quite cheap, I have seen them at swaps for $10-20.The LE coupe version pulls big money I sold one years ago for $680.00 on ebay If you want a cheaper one you will find the same unit was used in early 70`s Rolls Royce`s the face surround is slightly different in thickness but you would know once fitted.
