Evening gents,
Ive got my eye on a nice set of rods for the new engine build and with the dollar kicking the greenbacks ar$e im thinking of buying direct from the u.s. and bypassing the Rocket Tax
Now, having never imported anything before, how does this work?
Do I or the guy selling the parts need to fill out any crappy paperwork,and will customs "show me a good time" sans dinner and drinks once it lands in australia?
Lets assume the invoice says under a grand australian.

Paperwork is minimal, just a standard customs declaration from the sender which only takes a minute to fill out. Customs won't give you any problems on a set of rods provided price+shipping is under $1k The main problem is shipping, in that many US sellers are clueless as to how to ship economically. If they make an outrageous quote ask them if they will consider sending by USPS Priority Mail International Flat Rate Box http://www.usps.com/pric...international-prices.htmYou can get insurance on the regular and large box, and the postage is only about $45 on the regular box (up to 20lbs) USPS is their postal service, equivalent to our Aus Post, and not to be confused with UPS which is a courier similar to FedEx It all depends on whether they have good rates with someone like FedEx and are experienced, otherwise look for quotes yourself.

You can also get an importer to bring stuff in. I'm looking at a brand new M22 rockcrusher and 12 bolt to put away for future use.

See if the seller will send it on USPS Priority. DHL, Fedex and UPS are pretty expensive. USPS Priority usually takes about 7-10 days and is delivered to your door.

If its under $1000 you dont have to do any paperwork, no GST and no customs crap.
