Hi, I've got a question about Fascias for a November 1971 Build GTS coupe. Im a bit confused about what colour they would have been. Can any one assist? Was the Milling bright or black looking? Edited by user Saturday, 6 November 2010 4:07:44 AM(UTC)

It was turned metalfinish, the same as what you get off a milling machine.
The process was to chrome the plastic, then add a clear grey paint, to dull it, but still leave a metal finish.
The grey finish varies in colour, hence the difference incolour over the years.

Yes, I've seen it in black as well. Is that the usual colour?

This issue causes a lot of confusion. From what I've seen, early production vehicles (71 to part way thru 72)seemed to have a fascia which was chrome plated and then sprayed with a dark colour, either charcoal or black. (The colour might vary according to build plant.) The later vehicles seemed to receive a fascia which was not plastic chromed, but still painted a dark colour over the already black plastic. I have a couple which have a greenish tinge to them even! The first one I got, I thought it may have been overspray from a badly prepared spray job, but then I got a second one a couple of years later!
Regards Andy. |

Yeah I'll second all of that. If there were chrome ones they didnt produce them for very long, maybe only a few early months. I know of a guy who worked at the Elisabeth plant in SA for 40-years and he's only just finished restoring a late-74 HQ GTS4 and he went with the straight black fascia because thats how he remembered them, not chome and not smoked. Anyway if you have the transparent smoked finish over chrome on your fascia it would be looked upon as correct by most people, and if you go with straight chrome . . . you'll probably struggle to justify it. Also chrome would look kinda weird in a full black interior car and I doubt they ever did it.

i agree andy... my coupe is 8/71... with original interior including the facia.. you can see that from 40m odd years of being cleaned that it is 'black' over chrome as you say... cheers al

Peter Baily and I spoke at length to Noel Bedford abou this back in 2000. He was the guy responsible for the HQ dash.
He said they had trouble getting consitency on it.
The late ones may have been straight black due to anti glare regs.

No, not black but the very bright 'chrome' one is the correct item for a 1971 built car. All the comments on here are part correct in some way but the secret is in looking at pictures of real dashes when the cars were new. Look in the sales brochures, the HQ engineering report, the accessory brochures, the salespower selling kit, and the magazines of the day that tested the cars (Lone O'ranger 350 manual, etc., etc.). It's chrome dash fascias all the way. I had a lot of discussion on this matter before I got my car correct some time ago. The 'chrome' aspect is actually a vacuum metalising process which wears off over time due to cleaning, touching, etc. Ben Stewart set the record straight at Warwick with a few guys when he produced all the pictures I have mentioned above. It was an eye opener for me as I had not seen such amazing pictures of the dash fascias in the salespower material especially.

Yeah I'd go along with that theory. I think the only way you could fully justify having the chromed fascia is if you have a 1971 car . . . and thats what 'Pumpa15' has.

mate owns a HQ GTS4, sydney built, last month of HQ production in 74 (sept i think) shes absynth yellow & has its original dash & its a clear black/green over chrome. we removed the dash to give the car a full resto in 91, when you looked at the back of the facia it looked like it had been spray painted with silver, the silver would just blow away if touched, also the facia had it's date code g74 in yellow stamped on the back..
