I have an oppertunity to purchase some ID plates off a 77 LX SS Torana, specs are colour: yellow, motor: 308 trans: 4speed, trim: can't remember.
Does anyone have an idea of what these would be worth?
Cheers

you would only pay more than 50 bucks if you were going to do a rebirth... going to church makes you no more a christian than standing in a garage makes you a car... www.classicozwreck.com.au |

Good ID plates for a plate collector. Not much good otherwise.

I'd happily buy or swap something for them for my plate collection! I've even wrecked whole cars to obtain plates, like the LH SLR5000 that I did it to recently. Collections are where plates from dead cars belong, not on other shells. Unless of course a whole car is being repaired by using a new shell, but that is a different story to this one methinks.

Same story to me ,different shell either way.I dont buy expensive cars or plates ,thats why it doesnt bother me.I think the difference "to me" is saving an old car is great, but making a car into something its not and selling for massive profits bothers me.Thats fraud not saving an extinct old car.

Just remember the chassis number is recorded on one plate and will not match your car and the plates might be from a stolen car which means they may be recorded by the RTA/police. rebirthing is illegal and keeping plates as ornaments is probably illegal too as it could throw suspicion on the holder of the plates. Its your call at the end of the day.

I once knew a guy (deceased now)who wrecked many monaro`s and kept the plates as a keepsake he had more than 50 cars collected , when short of a dollar he was no stranger to selling them either on the sly..

cloudy actually keeping plates is illegal the same as number plates, thats why you surrender your plate to the rego office and also the wreckers by law are to destroy ID plates on the cars.Next time you go there (upullit / wreckers)they all are "belted with a chisel" for that reason. As I said thou ,I still believe in keeping the old cars alive, just not frauding "us" people , tell it like it is.

hey byron i have no problem with people that have plates as long as they dont rebirth another shell in this day and age though if someone wants plates or are selling them there up to no good i have looked at lots of so called genuine cars that are rebirths and the owners have paid good money for them!! take my sons genuine LXSS L31 M21 GU7 hatch we purchased it was hit on the passenger side front and the rail was bent it also had rust i could of got a mint shell for a very good price and put the tags and chassis number on but no fuXking way would i do that so 4 years later the rail has been changed all the rust cut out and its nearly ready for paint if i was dodgy i could of had it back on the road in 6 months and no body would of known what i had done (except me)

You've done what I would have done. But take an Acacia Ridge HQ sedan for instance, shells are identical. Why wouldn't you use a mint shell if you had access to one. It's all unbolt and replace, very different to Toranas though. People do it everyday to 1-tonners, no-one cares. And it isn't rebirthing as the chassis remains, although technically it is frowned upon (or illegal) nowadays to swap the ID plates particularly the ADR plate, others are no drama. Although you'd be silly not to swap the plates as they match the chassis and all you've done is use a replacement part! ALl too muddy for me!

As I also collect certain tags (commodore era) I clarified the plate issue with a NSW cop in the vehicle fraud area when I had the opportunity.
You cannot remove a compliance plate (the one with the chassis number & ADR numbers) from a vehicle - that's an offence, same with keeping it.
However, removing & keeping the body & thin VIN tags are no problem legally, as they don't contain vehicle's registration identification details (chassis number - up until the end of VL).
In later cars (VN onwards) the "body" plate is still OK, as the full ISO VIN number is not on it. Only the plates with the full chassis number or ISO VIN number (whichever is used for the rego ID) are the ones that are illegal to remove.

i think the rebirth thing came from people stealing cars and replacing the id plates to sell the "stolen" cars .as i recall a mate of mine before the rebirth laws came into affect he would buy a right off and replace the whole shell from a wreckers etc and place all the parts onto the car paint etc then get the car inspected over the pitts and no drama and thats with a different body number.now what these fellas are doing on these older cars are not as illegal as it seems as long as the body is not stolen its quite legal as the above post said the car is registered from the body number not the id plate as a id plate is only a luxury level.but you are tricking someone into thinking its something it was not in the first place another words do your homework |

A lot of people out there would swap ID`s on a car in a heartbeat,if someone owns a lx hatch and desires an SS they well may put them on a SS replica even if for bragging rights, this type of person would pay hundreds of dollars for plates, on the other hand plate collectors like any other collectors will pay good money for items for their own collection. Either way good money will be payed if that buyer wants something bad enough.
