It probably is, but you cannot tell with any certainty for HJ Kingswood ute prior to 10/75 without removing the paint. HJ XX7 Kingswood ute (and also 1976 XU3) are the only HJ Kingswoods not to have side strips (and tailgate strip on ute) which are held on by metal tabs welded on the body, plus they have big holes on at least one end of door and guard strips so screws can be put in from behind. Any evidence of these means not a Sandman, but it is hard on doors and guards to know if they are original. GTS dash, guards, wheels, steering wheel and a centre console are also indicators but except for the guards these are optional on HJ Kingswood ute anyway. If it has original paint anywhere the blackouts may also help.
Does the tyre placard have ND on the end of the number?

No it does not have ND after the number. Pretty sure the paint is mostly original it has the sandman stripes the flutes in the guards are black and the black under the doors etc has been curved up under the scuff plates. It has the GTS interior, but I'm curious about the carpet only going under half the seats then it has ribbed rubber mat the rest and vinyl under the rear window behind the seats.

Kaz ,dont forget alot of these cars were played around with as Byron's pointed out.The black paint under the door plates is a good indication, does it match the tags?,but you have to add everything up really.HJ's are a little harder to ID.It seems like one to me,try having a look at the behind the gauges also ,as it might have really old stickers on there which will be another clue, but as I said alot of playing around to get these cars to this day.carpet means nothing.its a fair journey ,but an interesting one.

Thank you for your bits of info. We bought the ute from its original owner who assured us he purchased a sandman and we had no reason not to believe him. But then some people said it can't be a sandman because it doesn't have the special plates, so I started to do some research {mysandman.com} and found this is not necessarily so, this ute being one example, so was hoping the plates or anything else maybe could Id it as one definitely.Personaly I believe it is genuine and will continue my project of restoring it as a sandman.

There is alot of "untruths" out there about "XX7" has to be on the plates. This is NOT true.

You cannot ID it definitely, you are just going to have to ignore the ****ers that have no idea (they are everywhere). Pre 10/75 Kingswood Sandman utes not out of Brisbane are almost impossible to be 100% sure. HJ Kingswood ute is a bit wierd with regards to carpet. It will never have both, but documentation is contradictory about carpet and when it was standard. From what i've found so far, B30 (carpet) was mandatory in HJ with XS6 (buckets) from 10/74 regardless of XX7 or not, and it appears to have become standard with all Kingswood utes at some stage during HJ.

Going on what the responses here and the fact you bought it from the original owner who says he bought a Sandman you would have to be fairly sure. I suppose it depends on how fairdinkum the owner was? Any photos?

Hi guy's, This might not help much ,but when I was about 19 (51 now !!)I bought a 1974 HJ Sandman panel van,253 4 speed. I was the second owner and the car was bought new by the guy I purchased from. Thing was being a 74 model (can't remember what month ) it was just pre polution and had a few quirks , if you like from later models,as I realised as a guy at work had a 75 model 308,which had a few different bits on it that mine didn't,so there seemed to be a bit of mix and match by Holden around this period. One thing I remember is mine did'nt have centre air outlets on the dash ( seems weird now ),which all others I've seen since had ,including a 76 HX 4 Door Monaro I owned later on,which had basically the same dash. Whish I still had both now !! Anyway might be useful info or not. Regards Phil

Fastphil, forced air ventilation was optional on HJ so your HJ Sandman didn't have it... hence no centre air vents.... your workmates 75 model did have it so had the centre airvents. Forced air ventilation was standard in HX Monaro so would have had the centre vents.

As Absinth says, C57 (forced air) was a HJ option. It became part of XU3 (and XX7) in HX and HZ but mid HZ series it became standard for all Holden and Kingswood as weell |
