Does anyone else have problems with gas bottles leaking. My oxy will sit for several months at a time between uses and almost without fail 1 or both cylinders will be empty. (BOC) can you fit bungs or would they just leak past the tap spindles, Being a bit old school I like working with gas for heating and the occasional weld or braze job. once it used to be just the rent that hurts but at current prices refilling cylinders for fun just isn't on! oily

Had that happen once a couple of years ago and BOC changed the bottle over for another. This happened after 2 days of picking them up off BOC so I don't know how you would go if it was a couple of weeks/months after pick up they emptied.

Oily, Go back and read the basic instruction manual. If you're finished using it for some time, turn it off at the bottles, release the pressure at the handpiece and screw the gauges out. Then there is only one place for to be a leak. otherwise there are about 8, too many places for gas to escape between the handpiece and bottles, seals, connections, controls, gauges, hoses etc. Of course this is basic stuff and as you say it's bloody exspensive stuff to be wasting and for the sake of another minute, well you're paying for it, besides you'll know yourself then if you have anything to debate with BOC and they can be tough too. I'll relate a little story for you !. I called in to BOC one day to get some equipment, about $125 and paid with my debit card, but the sales man mistakenly put an extra " 0 " and was charged $1250instead, which I immediately noticed and they rightly went about attempting to rectifying itI, but their system would'nt allow them to take refund any more than $120 at a time and then with a certain time in between each transaction. Meanwhile myself and offsider standing around waiting for 2 hours, thats 2x2 blokes equals half a days work missed at $70 hour, but as far as they were concerned that was unfortunate. On another occassion I took a bottle back to them for a refill and was told I could'nt bring one back because their records said I did'nt have one on hire to bring back. Nevertheless I left it there. Yes you guessed it, a couple years up the track the yearly statement comes out with an adjustment to the records claiming I had a bottle out and had two years rental to pay on it and their argument was no more gas till it was paid....Jack

I leave the gauges in cylinder valves off and regulators backed off. But it seems that over a long period eg 12 months it is common for the cylinders to be empty. I was wondering about using metal plugs has anyone tried this ? only I think it would leak past the spindle. I understand that everytime you get a refill you get a different cylinder and they say they are tested. My last E size cylinder of oxy was not ever used and it is the one that is now empty. Just having a whinge in case someone had an easy fix, Jack I sympathize on the accounting issue. There system cant cope with being in credit. oily

I might use my oxy a couple of times a year and have as of yet not had the gas leak out. Taps always off at the cylinder. There must be a problem with the cylinder tap. If its leaking out you should be able to see with some soapy water. Are you sure someone isnt helping you out by using the gas for you?

There is your problem "BOC" They would have to be the worst for suppling gas and rental of bottles.
They nearly always underfill, charge like wounded bulls, and their accounts dept are useless twits.
I was with them for almost 5 yrs, when a sales rep from Air Liquide walked into the workshop and made me a deal which I couldn't refuse on G Size Oxy/Acet, E Size Argo-Shield and E Size Welding Argon.
Shop around is my advice.
