just bought a hg prem from S.A. got back to VIC. Problem 1. had rwc done and they could not find chassis number. there was another number stamped onto subframe. has no id tags. The original chassis number had been bogged over. car has and still is registered for the past 7 years. vicroads check all numbers on car and none came up as stolen. I know they issue new ids to be stamped elsewhere if chassis number is damaged. Problem being is there is no record of the car ever existing or the sub frame stamp / chassis number. only the fact that the rego number is still currently registered to a hg prem. I have been told I cannot get this registered. Dunno wat to do from here

I don't know about the Prem, but my hg panelvan has the chassis number stamped on the firewall, right above where the engine wiring harness goes through. Hard to see, shine a light on an angle.
hope that helps

In SA chassis numbers are not recorded on early cars even up to WB in some cases, If a chassis gets changed no one reports it, even engine numbers are not always changed and cars get reg with the old numbers.Did you know it had no ID tags?

Didnt find out that it had no ID tags until i drove it home. Rang the seller up and queried him over several things and he just said thats the way it was when he got it 7 yrs ago. Been hung up on once already. Long drive to S.A. from Vic to return the damn car and demand my money back !.
I have been told this arvo that I could turn it into a civil suit to get my money back if the car is found out to be stolen (BUT cops have to find someone to charge). I have a few avenues I can go, though a few of them mean taking the car out of my possession. I have the original chassis number / after I sanded back all the bog. Didnt come up as stolen at vicroads. Handy to know that the chassis number were not recorded when the hg came out. I read on a blog somewhere that a car does no need ID tags at all to be registered.
Cheers for all the replies. Let you know when & if things get sorted.
All sounds positive(coming up as not stolen) but looks sus.

Pre 70 cars do not need tags, but your HG will require a compliance plate as it is post 70. You can register them without it but you need to talk to the motor registry. I did one years ago and I just had to complete a Stat Dec at the motor registry. But the car had been registered in Qld before.

Cheers People. Definately getting a feel for what has to be done here. Every little bit of info helps. Doing it right the first time and I wont have to lose sleep about it coming back to haunt me in the future.
