Hi guys, I am 15 and just bought myself a VB commodore to do up, First thing I want to do it put powersteering in it, another website told me to put a VB powersteering system in it and that I would need a new K Frame.
What do you think? and is it hard to do yourself?

Cheers

Unless you're running really wide tyres, a really small steering wheel, and your arms are like twigs, then the non-power steering isn't that bad once you're rolling.

Assuming you still want to do it:

You have to lift the motor up & support it - I have used a short section of I-beam across the strut towers & some chain around it (after jacking the motor up) to do this in the past.

You will need to get the pump & brackets to suit the motor you have - if you have a 6, only VB-VC-VH 3.3L & WB 3.3L will fit your VB.
If you have a V8 you can use any VB-VL bracket & pump.

You will need all the lines to suit your pump & rack (pump fittings are both imperial & metric in early commodores, with a changeover in '81) - so sourcing it all from one donor car is the best way if you want to use original era parts.

Now another approach:

Personally, if I was to convert one to power steer, I'd get a VL-VS V8 K-frame (your suspension, motor & mounts will bot up to it).

You then run a VN V6 power steering rack - using a VL intermediate shaft (links the column to the rack) to join it all up.
The advantage of this rack is that it's much better then the earlier ones, common as buggery and cheap in wreckers, cheap to recondition, and is an easy fit for larger exhausts down the track if you head that way.

You can then use whatever pump & bracket suits your motor - not worrying about metric or imperial threads, and just get a high pressure line made to suit from Enzed, Pirtek or the like.
The return line is only low pressure, and you can run this as flexible hose yourself.

Cheers,

Mick

Mick is correct. My VC runs 225 tyres without p/s, and I don't miss it. Think carefully before you do a lot of unnecessary work.

Yea, I am going to pass on the power steering idea, i drove my car for the first time the other day and it doent bother me at all aye. Once the wheels are moving its ok, and I am putting a 6 in it because I am on my P's and I want every extra hp I can get.

Never realy had a problem with no power steering in my WB (V8, wide tyres) until i had to tow a trailer for work and needed to do quite a bit of reversing, much easire job in the WB tho
