Hi guys,

I got given a sound system from a mate for free and have set it all up accept for my subs. I have been trying to figure out how to hook them up and I dont think that my Head Unit is capable of having subs running from it. My head unit model number is: Sony CDX-CA600X if anyone has this head unit or knows the answer to my question, could you please help me out.

Cheers
James

Check out this link, and download the installation manual:
http://www.sony.com.au/s...anual/product/cdx-ca600

You need to run the RCA leads off the rear output (centre pair as shown in the above diagram). These then go onto the amp that drives the subs.

Some head units have a seperate sub output, but on ones that don't (like this) you use the rear RCAs.

Cheers,

Mick

Thanks mate, but that manuel doesnt say anything about subs. And if I run my subs from the rear speakers output, where do I run my rear speakers from?

Cheers

As Mick said but worded differently:

You run your rear speakers from the rear speaker output wires and your sub from the RCA's on the rear of your head unit via an amplifier.

You can - but you will need what are effectively "double adapters" for the RCA plugs.

Here's one example:
http://www.jaycar.com.au...oductView.asp?ID=PA3560
This would have to plug into first amp, and you would run your lead from your head unit into it, and one out of it to the second amp. It doesn't matter which way is in or out in the adapter - the signal travels both ways. You will need 2 (L+R)

Or here's a similar one that's all female:
http://www.jaycar.com.au...oductView.asp?ID=PA3562
Again, 2 are required (L+R).
You can run your head unit's RCA leads into this, then use another 2 pairs of leads - one out to each amp.
Probably a bit neater than option 1 if your amps are in view, as you can hide these behind trim.

There is one last option - well it's 2-fold:

1. Delete the rear speaker amp & simply run the rear speakers off the head unit. This is ideal if your rear speakers are only for "fill" - as they should be in a quality sounding system. Your fronts should be doing the majority of the work anyway (apart from the very low frequencies that the subs cover).

2. Run a line-level convertor off the rear speaker outputs, to reduce those speaker level (high level) outputs to the (low/line level) RCA levels suitable for an amp. This will be a "dirtier" solution than the RCA adapters though, which will impact on sound quality.

Cheers,

Mick

Only if you have 2 amps, or a 4 channel amp - what I have described above allows a single pair of RCAs to be sent to 2 different amps (or the 3rd & 4th channel of a 4 channel amp).

Do you have an amp for your rear speakers?

I have a 6 channel amp so I can run the subs and speakers off the one amp cant I???
Dont I just have to buy 2 RCA double adapters and that way I can run all 4 speakers from the front perout and I can run the 2 subs from the rear preout. I know what I am doing wiring from the amp, it was just getting from the deck to the amp that had me confused because it didnt have a sub pre-out.

6 channel amp, no worries.

I'll call the pairs of RCAs on the amp Front (F), Rear (R) & Subs (S).

Method 1 (as you have suggested):

Double up the fronts from the deck into F & R on the amp, and run the rears from the deck into S on the amp, you have the following situation:
1. You won't be able to fade front to rear.
2. You will be able to "fade" from subs only (R on the deck) thru to speakers only (F on the deck) - giving you a makeshift method of controlling the sub level.
To adust the F/R balance, you'll need to adjust the gain on the amp itself. If this doesn't bother you, and you won't be changing the F/R balance, then go for it.

Method 2 would be:
Fronts from deck > F on amp.
Rears on deck > doubled & into R & S on amp.

This will still allow you to fade front/rear in the car, to obtain a better sound balance, but the sub level will be fixed to the level of the rear fill (although it is adjustable by the gain on the amp).

If you want to keep varying the bass level, or "crank it up" bit back it off on a regular basis, this is no good for you, and you'd be better off with the other method (1).

Mick
