IN NSW,IF I WANTED TO BUY A SET OF NUMBER PLATES OFF SOMEBODY,IT IS NOT THE CASE OF JUST HANDING MONEY OVER AND TRANSFERING STRAIGHT TO MY CAR? I KNOW I AM HAVING TROUBLES JUST TRYING TO TRANSFER MY PLATES BACK TO ME THAT I PUT ON MY PARENTS CAR(THAT WAS EASY),BUT TO GET THEM BACK AND PUTTING THEM ON MY WIFES CAR I HAVE TO FILL OUT MY LIFES STORY.I HEARD OFF SOMEONE A FEW YEARS AGO I WOULD HAVE TO GET THE GUY TO BUY A CHEAP CAR WITH A COUPLE OF WEEKS REGO,TRANSFER FROM HIS CAR TO THAT CAR AND THEN I WOULD BUY THAT CAR OFF HIM.SURELY IT IS NOT THAT HARD,DOES SOMEONE HAVE A SIMPLE WAY,I GUESS IT IS DIFFERENT FROM STATE TO STATE.ANY IDEAS?

I know that in the ACT you can do a plate exchange. Basically means swapping number plates....Jack

Go to the RTA with the plates and your parent/s and ask for a "Right to display" form get it filled out by your parent/s giving your wife the right to display the plates on her car, simple easy and your parents pick up a regular yellow plate for their car or they can take her old plates using the same type of form. They will charge a small fee for the transfer and another fee for new plates for your parents.

he's in NSW.and thats what I mean by arrangement.(check it all out first)as you say ,it changes daily and even depends on who's at the counter sometimes.

Plus if you surrender plates and get them re-made you'll pay an annual fee. Old personal plates are fee-free.

I AM TALKING ABOUT YELLOW AND BLACK(STANDARD ISSUE),OR THE BLACK AND WHITE TWO LETTER THREE NUMBERS.IN NSW YOU CANT ORDER THE YELLOW AND BLACK ANY MORE TO MATCH YOUR PLATES THAT MAY HAVE BEEN ON THE CAR WHEN NEW,YOU CAN ONLY BUY OUT OF THE COLOUR RANGE WHICH IS THE WRONG YELLOW AND COP THE FEE. I THINK YOU HAVE TO PAY A YEARLY FEE NOW IF YOU GET YOUR PLATES REMADE EVEN IF THEY WHERE BEFORE THE FEES CAME IN.THEY SHOULD HAVE ALONG THE BOTTOM,NSW THE RIP OFF STATE.

Same sort of thing but totally different. If I stumbled across a pair of old Vic black and white plates at a swapmeet or the like, can they be used on a car or are the just ornaments?

playwme is 100% correct, the only way to do it in NSW is to buy him a cheap car, get him to swap his plates between his 2 cars & then transfer that car into your name with the required plates.

In their wisdom, the parasites at the RTA now charge a high initial fee & an annual fee for any plate that is ordered with a particular number sequence. Say he had the standard yellow plates, ABC-123 on his car & you want to buy them off him. What they want him to do is to hand the plates in & then for you to apply for them. When you make that request they become a 'custom plate request'. They will then cost $110 up front plus $90 per year (every year) on top of your rego fee.

If you buy the right 'cheapy' you could make a profit from the car itself enough to pay for he transfer fees & get the plates for almost nothing, with no ongoing fee & they will have the old-school look. The fees on transferring a cheap car are not expensive because they are based on a percentage.
