Hi all
i have seen 2 different types of air cleaners for hq 350 cars
early type with a straight snorkel and later with the heat riser flap thingy?? attached to snorkel,if this is correct?? did they have 2 different exhaust manifolds on drivers side? 1 without a heat shield and 1 with a heat sheild to connect a tube/pipe to air cleaner?
also 350 manual cars had a section on the gearbox tunnel to clear the shift mechanism, was this a pressed metal add on or was it pressed into the floor pan, also the console would have been cut to clear this section, would it have had a plastic section added like they did in the hktg saginaw consoles? ,,,,,thanks dave

Yes two types early and late, late type have the heat pipe. Manifold fitted with stove.
The floor had a "blister" welded to it.
The console has a small section on the passesnger side like, but not the same as, the powerglide/saginaw HK console.

would you know the part or cast numbers for the 2 different manifolds? i have a hq parts book(1977 print) but it only lists 1

Howdy, what year is your car?
LH Manifolds
71 to mid 73 part number 3989055 with a casting number - 3932473
73 to late 74 part number (same I think) with a casting number - 3932469
RH Manifolds
71 to mid 73 part number 336708 with a casting number - 3932473
73 to late 74 part number 3973432 with a casting number - 3958562
I couldnt find a RH 3958562 anywhere for my 74 HQ but a 3973432 Camaro manifold is exactly the same and they're everywhere in the US.
The casting numbers are covered by the 'heat stove' tin-work anyway.
Hopefully someone might double check these numbers but this was what I worked out a few months ago with some help.

i am just playing around with a 71 coupe at the moment not an original 350 but has a qu 350engine, i have had a few originals in the past and still have a few bits and pieces so i will try and use the right parts to make it look the part,i have a couple of sets of manifolds but the cars i had were late 73's and i think one was 1/74 (statesman),i am sure they all had the stove pipe type aircleaners on them, i have about a dozen manifolds so the numbers will be handy,,,,regards dave

Some info for anyone who needs an early HQ 350 air cleaner assembly. You can buy new ones and much cheaper than the $600-$800 ones you see on ebay some times. Chrome lid GM Part Number: 6483843 https://www.paragoncorve...-air-cleaner-cover.aspx

$135 I didnt buy one but I'm sure this repro assembly is correct for early HQ 350 cars but just check with rickscamaros and make sure this assembly has a lid outer diameter of 15.5 inches and the body 14.75 inches diameter (approximately) |

Hey Leroy, no thanks mate I bought a couple of good ones from The US for about $50 each on ebay. Mines a 74 HQ so I needed one with the Thermo-Vac thing on the snorkle. 1970 L-48 Camaros and other L-48 cars have this type. |

Hi sen57r, In a nutshell there are two different air cleaner bases. The later type with the air preheat system was introduced from September 1973 on some but not all engines used in the GTS 350. As you mention, the correct item for a 1971 car is the one without the air preheat system. Have you checked out the QU engine number as it may be a correct manual engine? The casting date code will tell you a lot. The floor pan in a 350 manual car has a pressed metal ad on that was welded to the floor covering a hole cut with an oxy. A special console with a side extension was used. Parts for these special cars are very few and far between these days and are most desirable.

Not all muncie cars had a console fitted with the side extension. My Kingswood console was notched for the hump but it doesn't have the extension. I also have a 1971 magazine photo of a GTS coupe fitted with the same sort of console.
Rigpig: I think you'll find the 67 Camaro air cleaner is different to a HQ air cleaner. It is formed differently on the inside, there is also no breather filter hole and the snorkel points the wrong direction.

Howdy Mark, yeah I posted the wrong link. You can still get new correct ones. I found that 1970-72 Camaros and Novas with the L-48 engines usually have the correct air cleaners for a 74 HQ 350. ThermVac thing in the snorkle. The two I bought from the US are exactly the same as the original I had on my car.  |
