Hey has anyone fitted AU twin thermo fans on their XA XB or XC? If so do you have any pictures of how you mounted the fans and wiring etc? I'm trying to work out how to make these fans fit!

Hi mate,

Fitting the thermos is pretty straight forward. All the thermos from EF-BA are pretty close dimension wise, they just all mount a little differently, and to mount them on a XA-XC requires a little trimming to clear the hoses on your radiator.

They are all pretty much the right width.

I've used EF on my P6 and BA fans on my ZH.

The BA one i used fit a little better as it was perfect width and fitted exactly between the end tanks. The BA fans required only cutting off the top right mounting tab and fit straight on otherwise.

There is a lip at the top of the fans that sits on top of the XC radiator and i just drill two holes and use speed nuts where the factory XC shroud bolts on. At the bottom i just drill 2 holes in the thermo fan shroud and use two of the "cable ties" like are provided with davies craig tranny coolers to hold the fans at the bottom.

Should be a couple of photos attached showing the rad and fans.

I've had to move my rad forwards for obvious reasons but mounting the fans to your car should be the same.

Oh, and wiring... I have the fans on my P6 (EF fans) are wired through a single relay + 30A fuse and just turn on via a switch. The later model fans (ie: AU and BA) draw a $hit load more current and you'll need to wire each fan with it's own relay and fuse. I used a tridon thermo switch in my ZH mounted in hte water neck to switch the fans on. Part # TFS110. About $40 from bursons, repco, etc. Turns the fans on at 190F and off at 180F.

Thanks heaps for the info and the pics, I ended up mounting the fans the same way apart from the cable ties, I used some sheet metal at the bottom of the thermo fans, bolted it up then bent it 90 deg so it fits perfectly into the lower radiator shroud clips. It just about looks factory so very happy with that.

I got myself one of those adjustable thermo switches for the fan that goes through the top radiator hose but I'm not a big fan of it as it might leak. Where did you locate your fan switch? Did you have to tap a hole or did you just remove the blank offvthe water pump and locate it there?

I have not wired it all up yet waiting for my mate as he's an auto electrician and I think he would be more tidy with the wiring then I would be hehe.

the tridon ones are threaded 3/8 BSP. All the threads in hte water pump, block and thermostat housing on a clevo are 3/8 NPT (1 thread per inch different), so the sensor wont really screw in properly, it'll go in a bit then bind up and may leak.

I wouldnt put it into the threaded bung on the water pump, the bungs are on hte inlet side (cool) side of the pump, so your fans wouldnt come on until the motor was ready to melt down.

I put mine in the top of hte thermostat housing, but i have a fabricated alum housing i could tap the correct thread into.

If you're using a XC thermostat housing with the two vac switches on it you could remove one of them and either; have it welded and redrilled 3/8 BSP, or screw it in as is and use pipe goo to stop any leaks.
