Hi All,

Have just joined your great site and certainly impressed by the wealth of knowledge that contribute to the forums. which leads me to my question, i am trying to identify the origin and age of a Chev 350 motor, the info i was able to get from my brother700k's away was that it looked like the engine number was something like IIQU12866 K06 11H On the rear was a number 389 0010 and another K10. Is this enough info to determine what it was originally out of? also can a date of when it was manufactured be made from this info?

On small-block V8s, the date code is located on the bellhousing/transmission mounting flange at the rear of the block (Aussie drivers side)sometimes right by the casting number IE: 3970010 according to k10 = oct 1st 1970 that doesn't seem to match the engine number /time frame thou..
(if thats all the right numbers). people here know more..jim

I'll give it a shot, if I screw this up someone will soon let me know.

You'll need the casting date code to work out when the block was actually cast.

Engine was completed 10th of December (unknown year) at McKinnon Industries Canada.

Installed at the Pagewood plant NSW for a HQ Statesman (#2866 Chev engine from that plant?)

3970010 is a code for the alloy or mixture of metals used in the casting.

K10 is a Mckinnon Industries thing I guess, its not a date code.

the 10 in 3970010 stand for 10% nickel..

there are others too like 3970014 (L.A. Built camaro) and 3970020 with higher nickel content.
Old holdens brought on the spot, quick decision, cash paid.

As others have said it is a HQ Statesman engine, installed in a vehicle assembled in the Pagewood (Sydney) plant. It is less than the 2866th HQ onwards Chev engine stamped at this plant (I won't go into specifics why less than the 2866th). The engine was assembled in the McKinnon engine plant in Canada on 11/6 (probably 1971 or 1972). The cast date will be on the side of the block as a big w-i-d-e mark starting with a number (in this case probably 1 or 2) followed by a letter (for the month ((A to M)) and then one or two digits for the day of the month. I can't remember if is on the starter side or the other side. McKinnon blocks are buggers as they are hard to read the date code when in the car, but the digits are about 20mm or so high and can be spaced apart by an inch or more.

Hi all,

Thanks for the prompt response, i just got word there are a few numbers and symbols, like a 8A No D and a D,A and N with a 8 to the side of these. there is also a 2 followed by a M and 13, based on HK1837 am guessing this would make the block casting around 13th Dec being a 2 also guessing it would be 1972?

Don't wory too much about the DAN thing, it is just the shift at the plant. 2M13 is 13/12/72 as you guessed, however this doesn't align that good with the completion date although it is still quite possible to have a block cast in December and engine completed in June. One of the numbers migh be wrong somewhere, doesn't really change much about it or what it is though.

The K10 means
K= Mckinnon Industries(was originally an "M" till about the start of 1970 or there abouts)
10= is the Mould number at the factory .
As you will see castings like water pumps , manifolds etc. for these engines with K1 K2 K3 etc..
They are all internal die/moulds numbers to keep track of which mould each particular engine part came from .
Bit like Tonawanda blocks and engine parts you will see "CONV1" "CONV2" and so on and that means Conveyor 1 , Conveyor 2 etc.. And also like GM1 GM2 GM3 etc..

If the engine is original it'll probably have:

Heads - 3932441 or 3973487 or 3998993.
Inlet - 3973469 or 6263751
