Looks to me like someone out there is targeting ebay sellers with telling the ATO (Tax office) about how much money some people are making thru ebay without declaring it tax free in otherwords. In turn these SOB's are trying to blackmail the sellers to pay up some hush money .
Pickle me Grandmother!

ATO already have access to ebay records and EBay have to report anyone who makes more than $20,000 in sales in a year.

Dunno who this guy has a beef with.

I thought the reporting threshold was $10K annually?
ATO came knocking on a mate's door & he'd only just cracked $10K over a 12 month period, and that's what he was told.
Cheers,

Mick

Could be $10k. It used to be $20k but the government has trouble making their mind up and seem to change everything on a monthly basis.

I can understand the ATO wanting to chase businesses selling items & not paying them the GST component, or chasing people who are buying cheap goods elsewhere, purely to sell for a profit, but not everyone is "cheating" tax.

Here's 2 cases I've thought of:

Person A restores a car. For 15 years they've been collecting parts - buying them from wreckers, ebay & swap meets, with the odd new parts from dealers & the likes of rare spares. They are like all of us - sometimes the new parts aren't quite right, and they've bought 4 or 5 of each part to use just the best bits.

Now they've finished the resto, and it's time to offload all the parts - including some of the new items. With the value of some of these items nowdays, it wouldn't take much to hit $10 or $20K. So the ATO comes knocking... BUT you have already PAID GST on the new parts you're now selling off as excess. What gives them the right to double dip???

Case 2:
This is actually a real situation - it's a lady at my work. This person constantly buys new shoes, handbags & clothes - sometimes spending $300 a week doing so. She has an entire bedroom set up as shoes & accessories, and another bedroom that has a built in wardrobe, plus 2 more, just for clothes (this doesn't include her walk-in robe). The house is owned by her mother, who is in a home & they live there rent free.
Unfortunately Mum isn't in a good way, and doesn't have long left.
There are 4 children including her, so she's getting a 1/4 share. But they can't afford to buy the other 3 out of the house, and have to prepare to move, but they don't want to leave the expensive area they're in. They have found a place within their budget - it only has 2 bedrooms.
She is now "downsizing" - selling off stuff on ebay.

Here's the kicker - most of what she's selling is brand new, never worn or used, most still with tags. She has already paid income tax on the money she used to buy all this stuff, and paid GST when buying it.
I reckon she'll easily make $30K from the sale. What gives the ATO the right to try to tax her on that income from selling all these items??

Cheers,

Mick

Yeah Mick, there are a lot of legitimate cases where people are just selling their stuff off, but equally there are plenty of income tax cheats out there.

I doubt GST is a problem at all, you need to be turning over $50K pre annum before you are legally required to register for GST, so that would only apply to genuine businesses that are selling goods out the back door & pocketing the proceeds.

I've purchased plenty of stuff out of the trading post, off eBay & at swap meets, where the seller is often on the dole while still making a handsome income buying & selling goods while the rest of us are working 40 hours & paying income tax to support these pr!cks. That's what gets me hot under the collar & that's what the ATO are really looking out for.

I the words of Paul Keating.... "Black Money is costing australia growth". that was back in 91 & I think the GST has made it easier for the backyarder & killed off alot of good businesses.

Not wanting to turn this into a political forum, but I think GST has its good sides & its bad sides.

1. It replaced an outdated sales tax regime which had rates of over 30% on some goods, so much so that all manufactured goods dropped in price. Many overlook the fact that a new Commodore at the time saw its price drop nearly $2000. All car parts, except remanufactured items dropped by similar proportions.

2. It allows businesses to carry more stock. For example in the old days, if you kept $20,000 worth of parts on the shelf, over $4,000 of that was sales tax which you could never recover. So effectively for $20,000 you only received $16,000 worth of stock. With GST you outlay $22,000 to put $20,000 worth of stock on the shelf & you get the $2,000 GST back as a tax credit. So you've spent $20,000 & you've got $20,000 worth of stock on the shelf, 25% more stock for the same cost, way better.

3. A consumption tax is always more equatable. People who earn high wages, avoid income tax or earn it by criminal means, still spend that cash & still pay 10% tax on everything they buy. So the ATO misses out on some income tax but always gets the GST.

4. The main down-side is that it has turned all businesses (big or small) into unpaid tax collectors & are burdened with more paperwork than ever.

Unlike the new carbon dioxide tax, which does not replace any existing taxes, a GST (implemented as it was originally intended) is the fairest tax of all. BTW, I still don't understand by what mechanism that the climate will change by taxing the air we breathe & handing billions of $$ to Juliar.

I didn't really intend to make this a lecture in economics, but there is a lot less real 'black money' around these days than there ever was pre-GST.
