I have been hesitating as to what to do lately because I am fed up with doing up cars, mainly because of rip off shonky panel beaters and painters and I now just want to buy one that is turn key and enjoy. The problem is I would really love to get an XA GT coupe (XY GT just not an option because of cost) having had a four door as my first car which ended being stolen (C$%#S) but I was originally wanting a coupe but couldn't find one as good as the four door or an XY GT that was in my price range as well. With the coin I want to out lay now (about 40K) I have noticed that the coupes are out of my price range but I can get a genuine XA GT four door in excellent condition usually having been restored (recently) or a really well done excellent condition XY GT replica. So my question is do you buy a genuine model that is on the lower end of the market interest scale that looks good but two doors definitely look a lot more cooler or a replica of the genuine model that is at the top end of the market interest scale that looks more than just cool, it also looks tough. As an investment view point I personally believe that the correctly done XY GT replica would probably appreciate in value at about the same rate as the genuine four door XA GT. What is your opinion on all of this?

personally it sounds like your more interested in that era of ford muscle cars but your limiting yourself to gt's

you ultimatly want a coupe but have you considered a good landau or a gs with a 351 etc? surely they are alot cheaper then a gt and at the end of the day you get what you wanted, a coupe

Have to agree Cav. On the other hand if you aren't keen on panel beaters and rust repairs I'd steer clear of the coupes. They are a labour of love, dedication, frustration and poverty. bit like marriage but the coupe doesn't care if you lock it in the shed and turn the light off.

Aint that the truth brother! Restoring a coupe is not fun at all. Especially tracking down parts and bidding against what must be mining magnates on eBay!

That is why I mentioned that I want a turn key......no more restoring, I am well and truely over it, the question is you have 40K in the pocket and the option of buying an XYGT replica no more than 3year old job and very well done with all attention to details ( not one of these 302 C4 jobs that just because they have the stripes and a shaker they are a replica) or a genuine XAGT 4 door with very fresh everything and all genuine fittments from factory. Both are brilliant cars to drive, fantastic in looks (my opinion is the XY just has that more brute appeal), the only difference being is one is an original factory model but on the low end of interest scale or the other is a replica but of a model at the top end of interest scale. I suppose you could add the investment value issue into the question also.

From what I'm reading into it you prefer the XY. If you plan on keeping the car buy the one that will give you the most satisfaction and joy. You'll still get decent money if you have to sell it so it's still a better investment than driving a new toyota or hyundai off the dealers lot. The XA GT is a fine investment too. If it was me chosing I'd take the XA but I'm not you. I'd take the XA because I love the XAs and XBs.

It is so painful, I am a stickler for genuine, love the XA's but also love the XY's can somebody loan me a spare 40K and I will grab both. Why are all pre 78 fords so good, it makes buying only one so hard. I might invest in a time machine, anyone got one of those for sale?????

The XD ESP Fairmont Ghia with the 351 wasn't too shabby a car either. Buy shichever one will make you happy. Neither car will depreciate. If genuine is what you want and you need to see JG33 on the compliance plate buy the XA. Either car would be a good choice.

Buy a coupe! What does a 4 door XA GT have over a standard coupe that you can not add, or improve on? John Goss, Landau, Superbird. They are all quite rare. If you get a 302, bomb it. Then it will be quicker than a GT. I am not a big fan of fake GT's, but the XY is the most iconic Aussie car I would assume. Buy what ever you want most, don't worry about investment crap!

When I was a teenager I used to think that the XW/XY was the second best thing to an XA-XC Hardtop but never rated the sedans especially in XA form. Looking at this months Street Machine Magazine's top 60 feature cars it looks like I was not alone as there are two XA Hardtops in the 60 from the late 80's early 90's and both of them are wearing XC front sheetmetal. There is also Howard Astills XA hardtop with it's original front sheetmetal but it was from the mid 90's

Nowadays however I think that the XA GT is the best looking of the breed with it's unique front guards and would be just as happy with a GT sedan as a Hardtop.

Go to any Ford show and look at all the XY GT's it's like looking at 50 of the same car in different colours as that's about all that differs on them. This is due to there originality being somewhat crucial to their value not a case of following the pack.

I think that the XA GT will appreciate in value more than an XY GT replica in the future just because of it being less common.

It also comes down to colour.

What colour is the XA GT and what colour is the Replica XY?

That walnut glow is a nice chocolate brown and to me it's nicer than bronze wine which from memory is more of a rust colour

If it were me I'd be leaning towards the XA GT rather than a replica XY GT or even possibly a genuine XY GT.
