We are toying with the idea of making HK HT HG fuel tanks and have found there are about 8 different part numbers , my question to the forum members is, are there basically 3 different tanks with some minor changes for vent pipe or similar and which ones to make if any ?

I find it interesting you would consider making these. The tooling costs would be huge would they not? A good standard tank is easy to find. In fact, when dismantling the vehicles, I leave the tank in if there is a dent because so many are without dents and I wouldnt have the space for stacks of tanks.

25 gallon tanks are the hardest to obtain. Generally they are quite knocked around underneath from the harsh treatment the V8 GTS manual cars seemed to of copped. They can be repaired by splitting a standard tank and swapping the bottoms over.

The other sought after tank, the 16.5 gallon with the Salisbury hump, can easily be replicated by getting the right person to beat a hump into a standard one. Seen it done heaps.

Invest the money into HG tailight surrounds or blank column shrouds for floorshift cars, Sunvisors for Brougham/GTS, HK sedan rear door skins. Just to name a few of some very sought after but hard to obtain parts.

I take on board what you say but we have had many requests for fuel tanks as against none for HG tail lamp rims, sun visors & rear door skins, we have had requests for column shrouds and these are listed to be made. I will add the rims, sun visors & door skins to our wish list thanks for the advice on them.

There are only 4 part numbers for the tanks listed in the HT parts
catalogue
The other 4 numbers are tank guards

HK & early HT left hand vent 7448555 banjo rear

Late HT & HG right hand vent 2810671 banjo rear

Right hand vent Salisbury rear axle excluding manual 350 engine 2810673

Right hand vent Manual 350 engine 2810674

If you are going to make them you would have to offer the first 2 at a minimum but then this will leave out all the sales for Salisbury rear end and Bathurst originals as well as mock ups
There is no point in making one tank to fit all as you will have to make a choice from one of the first two and this is where most of your sales will go to the cars that have this style of tank ex factory
I would not part with any money for a brand new tank that has the vent pipe in the incorrect location
You would have to cut and fill holes in the body to accommodate the vent pipes to suit the tank and change the filler pipe also
This will change the originality of the car
I personally would like to see all four of them re manufactured to the same specifications as the original ones where made but as Simon mentions this will be a significant outlay in tooling

Leaving aside the banjo tanks and that very handy 1 pound lump hammer. As has previously been said they are not too difficult to find. The bottom section on all the salisbury tanks are the same, big or small, you just need the 2 different tops in your tooling and its the same process to join the top and bottom on them all.....Jack

they are not guards the guard numbers are 7435844,7435845,7449579 & 7439979.

We would eventually make them all as most of the tooling I think would be interchangeable or at least take inserts , we would start with the most popular and I do not believe the vent will be a problem as they will be put in last. So which ones do we make?

I only have the HT book so that's my only reference so that adds to your tooling
The Salisbury tanks have the hump in the top and the bottom of the tanks where the two half's join at the front of the tank

Hi guys, seems like you all know what you are talking about so wonder if you can help me with a problem I am having. My car is an imported South African Chevrolet SS/ rebadged HG GTS 350 Monaro with the 25 gallon tank. I have had a problem with petrol spilling out of the filler hole, I bought a new fuel cap from Rare Spares in Mandurah but it still leaked so the very helpful bloke there went through all his stock and we eventually settled on one that was the best fit however I am stil having leakage. Is there something that could be blocked or is there some kind of baffle in the tank to stop this problem that could be buggered? Any suggestions would be greatly apreciated, thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this problem.

Hi, it is possible one of the breather pipes is blocked or some mud has got up inside the one from underneath above the diff.

From experience, all locking petrol caps whether they be genuine or aftermarket, new or old, will let petrol leak out of the side.

I have been driving an HK HT HG as a daily driver for 20 plus years and can tell you as a fact the only cap that seals well and wont leak fuel out when you turn corners is a genuine non locking cap.

Get on ebay, (I've run out of them at the moment), find a genuine cap with a good cork seal (or make a new one), paint it your colour and use it. In regards to the one you purchased from Rare Spares I cant comment on it as I dont know i particular which one you bought although I have tested other aftermarket non locking caps in the past and they were all no good.

Original is best!!!

spot on Simon.. they all leak except for the gen one. The locking ones use the shape of the shim holding the gasket against the lip on the filler, thats why they spring back when you push them in. (or fall off if you try to pack them to stop the leak)
Gen one has similar setup to a radiator, so is in good contact with the filler neck if the gasket isn't faulty.

Bogart.. how can you afford 25 gallons of petrol!!!!

Thanks Simon and Bruvpig, a non locking cap would not suit my purposes as may be moving to an area that would where it would not be feasible especially if I could afford to fill the tank,lol. But will try clearing the breathers Simon mentioned and then as I have a large piece of cork gasket material cut a gasket and try that, thanks for your help it is much appreciated guys like you really make this site a great source of info.
P.S. I live in Newman, W.A. which has very little humidity so spend my free time tinkering on my old girl or out scavenging parts from the old HG's etc that have been left to rot by the diggies in the area so have plenty of parts, bumper bars etc and am happy to swap or just help out fellow Monaro /holden owners.

Les, great that you are thinking of making these. Keen to get hold of a big tank for the HG. There was another guy on this forum who was saying he was going to produce them but I dont think anything happened.

We have some later series tanks under tooling at present and will see how they go before producing others. Expected supply is early next year
