if i were you i would take the id plates off. as a car is registered by the engine and body number only. so if these are legal you have no problems as the plates are virtually a luxury level.when you reregister the car next tell the rego people there has been a mix up/misprint and that its meant to be hj not hq. as a car without plates is better than a car with the wrong id plates thats what is called a rebirth.(not good) |
why drink & drive when you can drift & slide |

sounds good in theory but they wont change a thing on the rego papers at a motor reg branch they will tell you if it doesnt match there computers off to regency you go.... they did it to me last year with my hk monaro my engine number is 307XXXXXko12 but when i got the car from brisbane and went to regency for the engine inspection they put it around the wrong way they wrote on the rego papers ko12307xxxxx after i noticed what they had done when i registred it again at motor reg i tried to get the engine number put the way it should be but no way would they do it i had to go for another inspection so i just left it even though regency made the mistake so go figure....

My wb had a typo on both the engine number and chassis number on the rego details from new. It was only discovered when I re-registered it after being un-registered for a couple of years. Had to sign a stat dec and fill in some forms and all was corrected. This from the rta in NSW too! They must be tough in SA!
The problem is surely with the SA rules in the past for not recording chassis numbers and therefore allowing the plates to become the identity of the car alone.

no very few old car here have there vin numbers or any plate numbers for that matter recorded its the rego number and engine number mostly on file.... but as soon as you do something that doesnt match there computer its off for an inspection to make sure there is nothing shonky going on.... i suppose its not a bad thing just a pain in the ass for people here in s.a oh and not to mention the inspection fee of $180

WBute, interesting thing in SA is that the plates do not mean anything either, until recently it was ONLY the engine number recorded. So my coupe only has the original engine number for the vehicle(The original HJ engine number)and no chassis or VIN on the rego slip but the rego slip states it is a 1971 vehicle! As mentioned previously, it has been registered since at least 1994 this way!

Another point I have not mentioned is the fact I have a verification letter from Holden confirming the car as a HJ GTS coupe. The engine number on my rego slip is the number Holdens have recorded as the original engine number against my car. The VIN number /chassis number and engine number all match. So again, does the fact that I don't have 1 piece of aluminium mean its not what it is? The car was sold new by United Holden in Adelaide in 1975, so its been an Adelaide car all of its life.

Yeah I should have said "allowing the engine number to become the identity of the car alone".

so its just the adr tag missing then????? well if so.... the best thing you can do is take the hq plate off the car and sell it minus the plate as the plate on there means nothing to the car you have its for a hq tell the new owner you dont have the adr tag but all other stuff matches and they have recorded the year wrong or just take it to regency to get the year changed either way you have a hj coupe with no adr tag so will effect what price you get even if you found the plate you still have to take it to regency to get the year changed another way you could get the year changed is if you know someone that works at a motor reg branch its good that you have the info with vin chassis and engine number and the year to confirm its a hj coupe not hq coupe so thats something if i was looking at buying it i would be more willing to buy it with no adr tag even though you have matching vin chassis and engine it still looks more suspicious with that hq tag on there Edited by user Friday, 13 May 2011 8:12:17 PM(UTC)

I have had the HQ ADR tag removed for years. I have a VIN tag and Body tag showing correct details. Just missing the correct ADR tag! Why somebody removed these is crazy as the rego department in SA only record the engine number. I'll be offline for the weekend so won't be responding to any posts for a couple of days. Cheers

I had a HQ coupe years ago that almost lost its ADR tag while giving the engine bay a wash with a standard hose, so its possible your may have been lost in a simular way. hope you find it. good luck |
