Hi Guys,
I have just bought myself a 186 kingswood 3 on the tree, great old girl that I am using as my daily driver, (90 kms per day round trip)
After getting her roadworthy and tuned (at great expense), the lack of power is unbelievable and getting worse by the day. I suspect carbie issues, but I am looking for a way to increase power and still retain some fuel economy. She currently tops out at 20 mph in second, and takes forever to build up to the speed limit. NEED HELP FROM THE GURUS. Any suggestions please.

if its not the fuel filter as byron says try a new air filter....

no air = no guts....

AIR,PETROL,SPARK......ONLY THREE THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND,I'M GOING TO SAY THIS IS A FUEL PROBLEM but check points first if you have some ,as they say above ,fuel filter(if fitted),get fresh fuel in the tank,swap a carby if you can get one you know works.look for fuel leaks..get back to us!!..lol

A 186 3 speed tuned at a great expense? Man they saw you coming. You should of consulted people on here before getting it tuned. Half an hour and $100 is all you need for a 186 and you are on your way. Sounds to me like they spend all their time tuning modern Commodores and imported garbage that they were stumped by the basics? An expensive tune on a 186 and you are only getting 20mph out of second I'd be taking it back and asking why.

I have been driving my 186 manual HT daily for nearly 15 years. Same engine, original bore stock as a rock unmodified. I change from second into third at 60km/h all the time (where speed limit is applicable). I suggest there is something seriously wrong with yours or she is very tired. Either fuel restriction as the others have already suggested or maybe timing? Distributor?. I can 100% vouch for a standard 186 in a HT with a three speed manual that they are still extremely practical and very economical with sufficient power for a daily driver. I have never felt the need to modify mine in any way and I am a lead foot 10k over the limit driver, always have been. I tow and do interstate trips and it never lets me down. Gee, I even towed a car trailer from Adelaide to Melbourne with it, loaded a Prem on the trailer and turned straight around and came back sitting on 90kmh. Adelaide hills were a killer. Imagine, first gear up a hill on the freeway with a trailer and car on the back. But, it did it no worries. and used no water for the whole trip.

I would suggest you take it back and get them to tune it again or diagnose it better. Let us know how you go. I wouldnt be putting extractors and bigger carby on it. You'll lose the good ecomomy. Spend the money on another 186 if yours is stuffed. Find the right one and you'll never want to let it go, like me.

Check that your disty weights are free and the points cam advances ok.You can do that by moving the rotor arm and see if the springs fully return it.

simon just reminded me of something i had happen many years ago, all the tuning in the world didnt fix it. The harmonic ballancer had slipped on its rubber ring and the timing was way out, even though it read spot on.
replaced lots of things first before i found that one.

I've always tuned mine myself but got stuck one day. The thing just wouldnt idle properly. Could of sworn it was some dirt in the carby. I stripped the carby twice. Then I give up and actually let a couple of mates have a go. They couldnt work it so I took it to the bloke around the corner (old school mechanic, manual gearbox specialist for 40 years). Turns out the dizzy had died more or less. Broken springs etc. Replaced it, timed it, good as gold again.

No electronic ignition for me. Thats too modern hi tech. Happy to keep changing the points.

Like all the others have said above its down to just 2 things fuel and spark but that can cover a lot eh and it's all pretty basic. Without good spark it does'nt matter how much fuel you're getting. Start from the coil if you've got good strong spark , if not then check centre wire to dizzy, if ok try another coil, if good see if you're getting same good strong spark to each plug wire if not good check if distibutor cap cracked or centre pin damaged or broken or even the rotor button damaged provided the plugs are ok. all very basic and that will take you about 10 minutes without using any diagnostic instruments. Well you're up to fuel and if the car has been sitting for a while the fuel may have gone off if so you can usually smell it....good luck....Jack

Easy way to check the balancer is....place the KEYWAY at 12 o'clock and the TIMING MARK should be at 11 o'clock
