SS Chev / Monaro ??{help Warren !! }

G'day all Dave Here .
Am a newbie on this forum.
Have been studing the SS chev / South African Monaro
& did see a couple of SS at 2010 Monaro nats in Warwick.

Im pretty condfident on Aust Manufactured cars
& Have a HK Kingswood [pagewood]& HT Monaro [melb] to help
me with the Aust identifing traits ie Firewall #'s & GMH tags.

Have seen POINTS to pick an SS chev
incl two tags on door jamb , TWIN headlight subframe &
NO firewall Numbers in identifing the SS from monaro .

What I 'm asking is {help Warren}
Is about one "monaro" on Ebay with SS tags in the door jamb
But Monaro Front sheet metal ?
Vendor says its SA built monaro - If so ,
shouldn't it have GMH Tags & Firewall #'s if its a MONARO ?

AFAIK Monaros were sold in SA by Holden dealers. Chev SS were sold by Chevrolet dealers. So you could get both South African Monaro and Chev SS. Warren or Dr Terry should know much expand more if they read this.

The South Africans first got the Monaro in HT and they were assembled in South Africa, so they do not have any Australian identifiers on them.

This tag is correct for a Monaro (80837 or 81837)

SS would be 5B837 or 5D837.

They all have the saginaw and salisbury dloor pans.

My info is that they first got the Monaro in 1969 but as an HK. I have pictures from an SA HK Monaro brochure. Seems that their model series ran a year or more behind ours. They were still selling HG well into 1972. As HK1837 has said there were two separate dealer networks, one selling Holdens & the other Chevs. Pontiacs, Vauxhalls, Opels etc. were also sold at either of these dealers.

Another point about SA assembled Holdens is that the underbonnet area (& boot on some models) is painted body colour, not black as with Aussie cars.

As Warren has said SA assembled cars did not get a firewall (chassis number) stamping. I believe that this is also the case with NZ assembled Holdens.

I always believed the South African
Holden Monaros
[not SS chevs] would've
had 'Holden Tags' but had not seen one
to be able to judge .

Also agree with the point about
body painted colour engine & boot compartments.
Have seen a few now-

Hello again- Dave here !{Help warren}
Just following on the discussion about SS chevrolets / South African
built Monaro .Have another question regarding "holes " I've seen on top edge of firewall on HT African built Monaros.[not ss chev]
The 'Holes' would be consistant with where Australian built cars would have had thier tags riveted. My question is - Did the S African assebled cars have the "holes" pre punched/ pressed in Australia before being shipped out or are the 'holes' not supposed to be there on African assy cars ?
Again nt trying to be a smartie ..am just trying to learn more about these elusive Holdens...

I have been told by an older South African Guy that the Holden Monaro Never Sold as it was not a known car over there . Hence the next year they marketed them as Chev SS and they sold like hot cakes . I was on the understanding they sent Aussie V8 Manual Body Shells to S.A with the saginaw and diff humps , so that it was a one body fits all whether you got be it 308 or 350 auto or manual , and also both the 308 and 350 Auto and Manual got the 350 Manual Hi Capacity (taller body and bail ) Master Cylinders also .
