I have a 186 powerglide HT Prem on gas with the filler cap next to the rear rego plate which is a bit offset but everything is still clearly visable for the coppers and cameras lol . It has been in for about 4 yrs now is very reliable and very cheap to run and being dual fuel it still runs perfect on petrol as well as i run it on that system once a week and if u go on long trips with both fuels there are no stops koz u have so much fuel to use . its the best of both worlds in mye eyes but a mate had a difference in opinion . I will eventually resto the car to original and the savings from lpg will go toward that .
I was in 2 minds b4 I did it but having the filler at the back of the car and not the ugly extra one on the side and a neat job under the bonnet it really doesnt bother me and once restored to factory original it will go . I just want to gauge everyones opinion koz i think it is a good option if done correctly and can still look good if done correctly .

Mate, if you want to restore it and leave the gas on it is entirely up to you, do what you want to do and don't worry about what people think or say. You could always replicate the fuel filler and stick it on the other side, have a bit of fun and see how many people pick up on it.

I wonder if theres a law against putting the filler under the bonnet somewhere? Never seen it done but I dont see why not. Anything BUT a freekin great big hole in the side of your car.

I've got my VL Brock running on straight gas, and I'm very happy with it. The filler is in the petrol filler hole, just above the regular fuel filler.
Gas was not my first choice though - initially I wanted to remove the gas, but after seeing how much had already been taken off the heads (the manifold sits on the block at the front & rear), and calculating the compression ratio to be in the high 11s, I began to worry about how it would run on petrol. I tried a batch of 98, and it was still pinging it's head off at only 8 degrees BTDC timing.
So I was left with 2 options - leave it on gas, or find a good set of HDT VL heads. It's hard enough finding regular VL heads, so I went down the path of straight gas. With the timing set right for gas, it runs fantastic.
After living with gas on it for some time now, I'm very happy with it, and I think from what you have described, your gas system is already well installed & running great, so in my opinion I'd leave it, and just relocate the filler to a hidden location. |
Cheers,

In the future liquid LPG injection may be the fuel of choice alongside E85. We'll just have to fill up more often and change rear tyres more often! |

I have the HQ ute (253) on straight gas. We simply put the gas filler where the fuel filler was and used an adapter for the petrol gauge so all looks pretty stock until you lift the bonnet.
I rebuilt the motor to suit gas and it runs so much smoother than with a carby and petrol.
No choke needed for cold starts - it does smell a bit now and then - reminds me of the little old tugs at Central railway pulling the bag trolly around years ago.

the fuel filler point must be external to the body & the tank must vent out side of the cabin or tub.
basically the fillers have to be on the outside as if they leak the gas will evaporate, if you put it in the engine bay or boot & it leaks you are asking for trouble. you also can not have the filler in the rear of a ute tub as gas is heaver than air & will sit in a tub, from memory it is also law now that the tanks in the back of utes have to be boxed & vented outside of the tub..
also be aware as of 2013 i think we begin to pay excise on LPG, in the end it will not be any more affordable than petrol due to the differences in output compaired to petrol. which in my opionion is stupid.. |

The excise on LPG already exists.
From 2008 to 2012 the Feds added 2.5c p/Litre each year. There is 10c excise on now & by 2012 it will be 12.5c.
By comparison, petrol has a 38c p/Litre excise. No matter what LPG costs in the future, petrol will always be approximately double that price.

I wasn't 100% sure wether the excise had started or not, but I was told by a former workmate who does lpg installations that if the carbon tax comes in LPG maynot be exempt, were as petrol may be, if thats the case making lpg almost as expensive, I hope this is not the case & it would be nice if we got some decent info from the gov reguarding this new tax.. personally I think it's a scam.. |

Behind the number plate is the way to go, I had 2 like this including my panelvan with the tank mounted under the floor. With Historic reg in SA LPG is not allowed, but who knows one day it may come in.

I may be totally wrong, but I reckon there will be no carbon tax as it is now proposed, and that Gillard will be gone before year's end and be the scapegoat. |

If you can't find one of those then VH, VJ & VK Valiants had them too as did XD, XE and XF Falcons (they would be easiest to get I presume). |
