I am looking at buying a vh to vl .
I want a V8 not a 6, and it must be factory v8, no modified cars.
is there an id number which identifies a car as v8 from the factory?

Couple of ways. I'll cover VK first:
There are 3 tags on the car.
Thin VIN tag on the nose, just in front of the bonnet catch.
Correspondence plate (often called the build plate or body options plate)
Compliance plate.
The correspondence & compliance plates are mounted on the LH inner guard, behind the battery.
Only the first 2 will give you the indication of a V8 or not, and the 6 digits of the body number should match the end of the number stamped on the VIN tag (but it will have a K on the end).
On the correspondence plate, there's 2 ways of knowing:
Model line.
Example: VK8VL19-233
The 233 is the pack.
First digit is the luxury level: 1=SL/exec, 2=Berlina, 3=Calais
2nd digit is the engine: 1=carby 6, 2=EFI 6, 3=V8
3rd digit is the gearbox: 3=trimatic auto, 4=4 speed manual, 5=5 speed manual(carby 6 only)
ENG on the correspondence plate is also a way of telling:
L14 = carby 6
LL9 = EFI 6
L31, LV2 & V7X are all V8.
On the thin VIN tag, the 5th character is the engine code, and should match the prefix on the block.
Example:
8K19TE123456K
The T is the engine code, and it should have a VT prefix engine.
The engine codes are:
A = 304 auto
B = 304 manual (jan 85 to july 85)
G = 304 manual (Aug 85 onwards)
T = 308 (up to end of 84)
C = 304 Group A engine
Z = 308 V5H option (unlikely you'll find one of these)
K = EFI 6
L = carby 6
That should get you out of strife! |

VL is a little easier. You'll pick a modded one a lot easier as there are many, many differences in the engine bay - like the battery tray, wiring harness, relays behind the RH headlight, canister location & bracket, fuel lines, earthing points....
All the tags on a VL are on the firewall/plenum, near the fuse box.
Correspondence plate:
Same option packs apply to VL, as per VK - ie 133, 233 & 333 are the V8 packs.
VL V8s are all LV2 on the ENG part of the correspondence plate.
All VL V8s ran M40 as the gearbox code - they were all auto from the GMH assembly line, except the Group As.
VIN tag:
All standard V8s have a VJ prefix block (therefore a J as the 5th character in the VIN).
If you have a HDT or HSV Group A, then this is a W or P respectively. |

I have a vk with the body number 954907M on the correspondence plate, above you said it should be a k on the end, also there is no 3 digits like 233 or 123 ect. Any ideas |

Different plate Steve - that M denotes Melbourne assembly.
Not all VKs had the model extension, but most did. You would need to post the details off the correspondence plate (body options) to decode your car fully. |
