My GTS 350 has its 40th later this year. I thought the anniversay of the HQ was later in July? Anyone seen the Just Holdens special with the Lina Mint car on the front cover? Another let down as usual but at least the colour of the cover car was right on.

I checked a number of sections in the book and we used 14th July every time.

I cannot remember how we dated each model, I think the method used was the embargo date on the press release. But if others think that the 14th is not correct, they may be right.

I have 15th July 1971 as the embargoed date. The date of release for retail sale (showroom unveiling) was the 22nd July 1971. The 14th was probably the day they showed the cars to the press, but they weren't allowed to distribute that info until the next day.

This is one of the reasons I've put both dates on my book. It's common to see either date quoted & they are both correct for different reasons.

Well there you go, chalk up another one for the Monaro Story. I think that makes a dozen now.

Greetings, The 22nd July seems to be the go for getting out the Modern Motor HQ record. After cleaning the needle, it's time to turn up the volume to 11 and listen to Rob Luck do the big burnout in the 350 manual GTS. The whole suburb can join in the celebrations! Way way cool stuff!!! Maybe the newspapers are the way of confirming the actual release?
look out, the guru is coming through...

Greetings, Nearly forgot about a famous bit of trivia in relation to the HQ. The press bagged the whole range like they had never done previously. What a sham. A great way to move is how the car was marketed but they weren't referring to the manner of getting from A to B. The HQ moved for all the wrong reasons - a tragedy of a stylist's dream according to gospel. You could say that the HQ was a turning point in many ways.

Yes, the way I confirmed the release dates in my book were to use the embargo date from the media release as the official press release date & to search newspaper archives which always coincided with the showroom release date.

Yes, the press slammed the poor old HQ, but it did have a honeymoon period.

Have you read the new book on Monaros by Gavin Farmer, it chronicles this press attitude very well.
