Hi Guys,
Is changing a water pump on an original 149 EH Holden something the average person can do ?
If so can someone give me brief explanation about how to go about it ?

take an hour at most unless you break a bolt or something.take the fan belt off, take the fan off, remove bolts to pump, remove pump, make sure you clean block up so new gasket sits properly, use non hardening gasket goo, both sides of gasket, fit gasket, fit pump, fit everything else. if bolt heads are damaged get good ones or it can be difficult to remove later. don't try to work on hot motor.dangerous and uncomfortable. use good tools not shifter/crascent type spanners they are a sure way to damage bolt heads.

On an EH, if it's still in the car, the radiator will need to be removed first, so disconnect top & bottom hoses & auto trans cooler lines (if it's an auto) then un-bolt & remove radiator. Then remove fan & water pump pulley. Then follow above instructions.

if its original waterpump it ul be th small bolt pattern (ie 45mm centre to centre, & if its been changed b4 it ul prop be later pump ie 54mm centre to centre. so check yor replacement pump for that, as youl need different spacer & fan blades to suit regards DD www.bellarineclassicautos.com.au

forgot about removing radiator. doubt it is auto tho being 149. also to remove fan belt loosen generator bolts and swing generator over to allow belt to loosen. not a higly complex job barring accidents.

I was under the impression that you could not get 149 autos. like you could not buy manual 179s. but my memory could be faulty....

No, 149 autos were available, especially in 1963 at the EH release. In those days you could only get 149/man, 149/auto & 179/auto combinations.
As peter said all autos were 149s unless the 179 engine was optioned.
My own EH is a Winton Red/Fowlers Ivory Special sedan with a 149/auto.
As davo said, check that your new pump has the earlier (smaller) fan bolt pattern before you fit it, although there is no spacer, the fan bolts directly to the pump & pulley.
