cleaned up the engine bay and I want to finish it in gunblue.
is there a more economic way to do it than pay a fortune to the gunsmiths for the little bottles they offer?

I'm not sure what the smiths are selling but it is probably a cold bluing formula. Cold bluing is far less dangerous than hot bluing but not as durable. Hot bluing is basically caustic soda + ammonium nitrate + nitric acid. You heat it on a gas stove in your backyard. You can find guides on it if you google. You have to heat the bluing soln to about 280F. Be aware that the flash point of water is 212F so if you splash any water into your solution it will basically explode and shower you with the hot caustic solution. Other methods are parkerizing and cold black oxide.

If you want the true blue/black gun blue finish you will have to use hot caustic bluing and highly polish before treating. The chemicals are reasonably cheap but as I said this is a fairly hazardous operation.

Gun blue? Its far from a durable finnish. You have to keep guns oiled or where ever your fingers touch them/or moisture gets they will go rusty. Engine bay would be rusty within 12 months.
