I know of an Alloytech in a VE that just self destructed at 160,000km. Not sure if it was a servicing issue or something more sinister.

I have heard a few reports that the Holden motors don't particularly like LPG, I'm sure someone on here will have a bit more info on that. If you're going gas then why not get the V8 and have a bit of grunt there when you need it?

unless you are doing bulk km's gas makes no sense. i've had 7 cars on dual fuel, none were particularly reliable with the exception of a carb crossflow XF which loved it.

my daily is a vy berlina, i regularly get 830-870km from 65 litres on hwy, round town don't know. approx 7.5l/100km
my other car is landcruiser dual fuel, 20litres gas goes 100km. yes heavy car etc but still...

I bought a VZ Cross8 as it got a few upgrades over the VY. I can't remember what they were but I think drive by wire, 4L65E tranny and a nicer nose treatment were a few. The later VZ's also got 6.0L engines (about 1/2006 onwards). I don't know about the V6 versions though, I never even considered one.

I've got a VY v6 ute with factory Impco gas and the Ecotec engine. Built April 04. It's got just short of 160,000 k's and has never missed a beat. Runs beautifully on both gas and petrol. Fuel consumption around town, stop start about 16 to 16.5 and about 12.5 on a country trip. I've done 2 runs this year Melbourne to Kalgoorlie, mostly on gas, and each trip was perfect.
Make sure you have good leads and Holden recommend to change the plugs every 20,000.
I've had gas cars in V8, straight 6 and V6 since 1989 and this is by far the best. Had the car since February last year. Apart from regular services, haven't had to put a spanner to it.

The wife's got a VX with the same Impco setup. Got it converted at 110,000 and it's now got 210,000 on the engine. Same deal, no problems.

My current VT has gas which goes okay but the fuel pump has almost packed up, Asked my mechanic today about VZ`s says they have had a couple in with all the valves and internals gummed up and crap inside the rocker covers from lack of oil changes or long intervals, but ones on lpg seem to suffer less from this, so find one with a good service history, which I would do reguardless. I think I will give the WM an extra oil change between the 15,000k intervals.

Hi;

Have got a Vz acclaim wagon with the alloytec - bloody piece of crap! Thermostat failed closed at 140k, thought I caught it in time but ended up doing a head gasket too. Apparently VERY common on these. To change the thermostat - $1200. To fix head gaskets (and do timing chain while there) - $4500. Burning the bloody thing - $priceless!!!!!

While im on the subject, and appologies for the hijack - anyone in Melbourne suggest a good mechanic OTHER than holden to fix this head gasket for me?

Cheers;

Geoff

would not piss on one if it was on fire, three timing chains, could of done the same job with two, the thermostat down the back.
i have seen a few with mystery water use no external leaks??? head gasket or similar?
then there is the oil issue seen one at 100,000 km every service at holden and it was a right royal mess under the rocker covers.
buy a 6.0 if you can afford the redgo

My VZ is on petrol only. Bought it at 80K, former bosses car, now 117K. I do oil & filter at 10K, use a synthetic oil. No probs thus far.

Hmmm VY is looking better, my mechanic also said he has found a few vz`s heavily gummed up and has already rebuilt one that arrived in limp mode!Oil changes are part of the problem it needs to be done more regular than specified.
