I have a fully rebuild M21 gearbox that we were going to use on a 253 but from the engine sitting in 6 feet of flood water it's been dumped so I'm wondering if the M21 can be mated to a 202 engine.

Get onto Kingswood Country in Victoria. You can buy a repro XU-1 input shaft to fit to an M21 to turn it into a 6cyl M21. It will still have M21 ratios (XU-1 M20 is different again) but the inputs shafts are the same for 6cyl M21 and XU-1 M20. You will also need a 6cyl input shaft cover.

Can the fitting of the new imput shaft be done at home or should it be left to a professional.
Is this the correct part:

Holden Torana XU1 Aussie 4sp M21 6cyl new input shaft.

It is the whole front shaft, V8 is longer than 6cyl. The box will preobably need to be pulled apart anyway to have a kit put through it as they are normally worn inside. You can change the front shaft if you are careful, but you'll still have to pull the side cover off and support the main shaft once the input shaft comes out. You'll need new needle rollers for the input to main shaft bearing. Hold them in the input shaft using vaseline and slide it and the 4th gear synhro ring into place whilst supporting the main shaft.

Thanks I spent $1200 having the box rebuilt 5 years ago and never used.
Just to track down the 6 cylinder imput shaft cover, maybe Kingswood Country will have this to.

Any Aussie 3 or 4spd with a neoprene seal will do.
