My Chev 10 bolt diff makes loud crunching noises for about 10-30 seconds, after doing a burn out. What could the problem be ? The diff was only rebuilt a year ago. Thanks.

Not sure if you're serious with this or not but, assuming you are, and assuming that the diff is an LSD, and assuming that you're going 'round in circles at a rapid rate of knots, always in the same direction, then the diff oil can be running to one side, leaving the clutch pack on the other side of the diff a little dry. When you straighten up, it takes a while for the oil to saturate the clutch pack again, so it's noisy until then. I have also found that you must use GM Friction Modifier on 10 bolt LSD's, otherwise the diff will sound like it's going to fall out when it gets to operating temperature.

AMunro327 doing circle is not the case. It is an LSD and dose the GM Friction.
Peer pressure got me one night when i was leaving a mates place, so just had my foot on the brake a bit and it was only one wheel was spinning. Gave it a bit more RPM and both wheels were spinning for about 30 seconds. Got about 400m down the road, turned a corner and there was a loud crunching sound coming out of the diff. Got it turned around, head back to my mates, it wouldnt make the crunching sound driving in a stright line. Turned into the drive way and the sound came back. I jacked it up, pulled both axles out, every think seemed fine. Put it all back toghther, went around the block and no more sound.
This happened again abut 3 months later and crunching sound went away after about 30 seconds.
When i got it rebuild about a year ago, i was told the LSD centre was fine and no problems with it.
Could the LSD be stuffed or some think eles ?

check your universal joints fron and rear. even the front one can sound like a diff noise. |
