Is this the one that runs around January or February each year?

If so, why did it stop?

I discovered it by accident when I went down for a wedding a few years ago. Was huge. Took me 2 days to finish it.

Hi mate. yep thats the one. Its around late jan or feb I think. Its massive and was the biggest one in the southern hemisphere or something like that.. But isnt everything..? The promoter and the ballarat council had a falling out and he pulled the pin. Theres court action going on, but the council wanted it to continue so now the rotary clubs are running it..

I heard on the weekend that it was off so I did some investigation and the news was not looking good so I wrote to the tourism information people in Ballarat and found that the Super Southern Swap Meet is indeed on maybe under a different name. There answer is below which is almost word for word what Haizy said above:
Hi James,
Thanks you for your very timely email.
It has just been confirmed this morning that the Ballarat Swap Meet will go ahead in Ballarat in February 2012. The Swap Meet is being presented by the Rotary Clubs of Ballarat and will take place at Ballarat Airport over the weekend of 25 & 26 February 2012.

Further details of the Ballarat Swap Meet will be known in the coming weeks, all of our accommodation operators were informed of the dates this morning and it would be advisable to book as soon as possible.

I hope this information is of assistance to you. For further information about Ballarat please view our website www.visitballarat.com.au or phone our Free Call number 1800 44 66 33. When you arrive in Ballarat you may also wish to call into our Visitor Information Centre located at 43 Lydiard Street North in the CBD.
Kind Regards,

Yep do it. after all it's ONLY a 2200km round trip from Sydney. It's a 1600km round trip from my place and I have gone every year since Feb 1994.

It looks like it's on Saturday and Sunday in 2012. I'll have to confirm because it used to be on Friday-Sunday then they dropped the Sunday which stuffed it a bit as sellers used to be gone by 2pm on the Sunday so dropping the Sunday made most of them go by 2pm on Saturday.

So if it's Saturday/Sunday you really need to be in Ballarat on Friday or very early Saturday.

The first year that we went we got to the swap meet at about 1PM on the Saturday, stayed there All Saturday arvo, left the swap meet to find Accommodation (impossible) so we had to stay 40km away in Ballan. Got up early Sunday morning and went back to the swap meet only to discover that we had only covered about a third of it on Saturday afternoon.

It used to be about 3500 sites 10m metres wide each so if you walked past all of them you had done about 35km lucky you walk past them two at a time.

I bought it up in casual conversation with my wife while in bed last night. She reminded me that I said I was going back every year and that I never actually did.

So I guess that is my ticket to go back in February.

Happy days!

MMM gonna stuff up alot of other peoples plans, I know that the Wangaratta swap meet was moved to that very week end due to the demise of the ballarat one, I also believe there is a few more who also changed there dates to about that time, so it's going to be interesting to see if it gets the same influx/size as previous years.
But I wold still travel down to have a look..
might go book my powered site asap.

I guess that these organisers jumped the gun a bit and didn't read about the fact that Ballarat Council was not going to let all that money go elsewhere.

I was discussing it with a mate of mine yesterday. We go there we stay in hotels we eat meals we fill the car up and we drink enough beer to regret it the next morning sometimes. Occasionally you have to spend money locally to get the car or trailer fixed.

Even people that spend a bit less in town by camping on site still fill their vehicles up and a fair few spend a good chunk of their swap meet takings at the local bottle shops.

I would guess that a few even stay on in Ballarat for a few days holiday and sight seeing.

So yes it's probably a good thing for the town especially when you consider that it does not seem to attract the unwanted dickheads in as big a number as the Summernats bring to Canberra.

Just be wary of people swapping in the carpark, I stayed one year in the swapmeet camping grounds and had the statesman lower grille stolen off my panel van while I was away hunting for parts!

Thats true Jim. The ballarat council have been all over the local media here, patting themselves on the back for ressurecting the swapmeet. Youre right, its a lucrative gig for the town so they were keen to keep it here, and they copped a lot of flac earlier in the year when it got dumped after the dispute. Theyre copping a bit of s*** at the moment for planning to demolish and redevelop the old town hall so they were prob keen for a good news story.

I got your email but my reply bounced, so yep, be great to catch up. Cheers!
