I'm an ex race mechanic and left to try my current career. I didn't do super cars full time though but it is definatly a full time career. Infact you will no doubt be doing more hours then most other careers, long days plus weekend work and overtime anytime something goes wrong. Pay can be good in the right team, well as good as pay gets in the automotive industry atleast but you do have to get into a bigger budget team.even in the super cars alot of teams are on shoe string budgets where they take shortcuts on pay as they know you can be replaced by another eager young person. If your mechanically minded offer or ask development teams for a few days work for free etc, alot of teams are happy to give it a try. Most people I know in super cars worked weekends for free for a year and then applied for jobs at the end of the year in bigger teams. Also if you have time time to do it look into the motor sports training australia tafe courses. They do trade specific training and work experiences, I personally started off there too when I was 18. I'm probably dragging on a bit now but I would of had 20+ friends in the racing game at one point and 80% of then get over the long hours and lack of a social life pretty quickly. The others now work for fpr, hrt and djr. most are on sub assemblies with good pay and less hours but you've got to be prepared to give up a lot to do it

Most, if not all of the team mechanics, Stone Bros for sure, are on contract.

i know a guy who worked for HDT, he started out by sweeping the floors and making the coffee for free
you gotta start from the bottom and work your way up, like any trade i spose
