Hi Guys
Can someone give me some help please. My grey motor still pings. New points, new dizzy cap and rotor, leads and plugs, and timed exactly to the mark on the fly wheel. Under load/acceleration, the bloody thing still pings. I am using normal unleaded (have hardened valve seats) but I know that fuel isnt the problem.
Any ideas and fixes ?????

I think GMHoldman meant RETARD it a few degrees, as advancing it will only make it ping worse.
To answer the question, there are many variables here. Firstly what Grey motor are we talking, because FX/FJ have the mark (ball) on the flywheel |

Pinging will occur whenever the temperature and pressure in the combustion chamber rises above the level the fuel was designed for. The ignition timing, compression ratio, cooling system efficiency, restrictions in the exhaust, a lean fuel mixtur

Brian does the new unleaded leave the white deposits I was under the impression it doesn't. Also check the fuel pump and fuel flow if the fuel flow is restricted by a dirty filter or blocked pipes or pump not up to scratch you can get pinging as well as

I forgot about the unleaded fuel so you could be right about the plug colour. Unleaded usually leaves a black rather than grey exhaust pipe when everything is normal but I left the trade so long ago I can not remenber what happens when you run u

Check the spark plug colour, a white/grey colour indicates lean, black rich, the ideal is a nice bronze colour on all plugs, not just the easiest one to remove. Try using 95ron fuel as the old leaded was 97ron, my HZ will only behave on 98premium.....cost

Hi Guys.
When Grey motor were designed, there was no Super petrol.
With original comp ratios of 6.5 (FX) to 7.25 (EJ) the Greys are quite happy on low octane unleaded.
The higher octane fuels are needed for late 60s onwards cars.
