cause they are cheap cheap cheap, and the basketcase needs a 4wd for the boat launching.
they are a good size for me, just wondering about the motor/auto mainly.

don't know much about them they are supposed to be good off road but have a habit of bursting into flames or leaking in the rain, best of both worlds.

Hello basketcasebear i have had 2 jeeps a 96 cherokee laredo and currently own a 97 XJ cherokee classic. Both are great cars my Laredo's tranny died at 320,000km and was hard to source as its a chrysler transmission. cost $1200 for a second hand one. Other then that we had no problems other then normal wear and tear. We have now opted for the 97 Cherokee classic its no more thirsty then any other large engined petrol 4WD but has loads of power and the old 4 litre HEMI is bulletproof! Awesome turning circle better then our VR dunnydore, is comfy has all mod cons like cruise and power windows ect... The XJ jeep had the asian warner transmission which is very strong and same as in the hilux, surf, soarer and other toyota's. 97 is the best model for reliabilty the 98 and 99 had cosmetic isues like window regulators falling apart and other interior problems. The biggest flaws are the exhaust manifolds can crack which is why most have extractors. The radiators has the plastic tops like the commodore and are known to split like the commodore. The trannys need an extra cooler if towing alot. They are easy and cheap to get parts and mine is great offroad as in beach and camping, im not into crawling my family car up a mountain side so i cant compare it to a landcruiser or Patrol. The XJ jeep is a great all round 4WD and for a daily driver come weekend warrior i cant fault it. There was a fault in the later model cars i think around 2005 and a few burned down, i think jeep has fixed this and im sure any that any made around then would have burned down by now if they had a fault. I hope this helps.

Like all cars get one with low kms, its easy to get a mid 90's model jeep with under 200k on the clock. if you can get the models with the toyota tranny way more reliable and easyier to fix. Also the mid to late 90's jeeps wont idle after a flat battery needs to be driven for 5 mins to reset idle. You can buy alsmost anything for them from the USA Lift kits, spring kits, stroker supercharger and turbo kits way more options then most 4WD out there. check out the AUSJEEP forum they can help with almost anything.hope you enjoy your jeep as much as we do! Good luck.

all i know is that up to 2000 all XJ jeeps had the Asian warner trasnmission the luxury models like Laredo and grand cherokee which were called ZJ had chrysler transmissions. after 2000 im not sure you would have to ask the question on AUSJEEP.

Sounds like you've had a better run than average out of your Jeeps, it's often a lot to do with the way they're driven & serviced. I know many other Jeep owners who have had worse experiences than yours. Speaking as a workshop owner, I shudder when a Jeep appears at the front door, some of the issues they have are a worry & parts are often a drama.

You mention that " the old 4 litre HEMI is bulletproof!". Bulletproof it is, like many cast iron motors, but it's not a HEMI & it's not related to the Chrysler Hemi 6, although it does look very similar. Jeep may be owned by Chrysler nowadays, but when that motor was developed, Jeep was part of the American Motors group. American Motors was the 4th US manufacturer (after GM, Ford & Chrysler), back when the 'Big 3' was the 'Big 4'. They made Ramblers & Jeeps (& others) but went broke in the 80s. Rambler is no longer, but Jeep was worth saving & was picked up by Chrysler.

The comment regarding the turning circle being better than a VR Commodore is interesting. The factory figure for a VR/VS Commodore is 11 metres & this includes the LWB Statesman. The factory figure for a Jeep Cherokee is anywhere from 11.2 to 12.8 metres depending on which model. 4WD & FWD cars normally have larger turning circle than RWD cars because the CV joints at the front limit the maximum turning angle. Try a late model Camry or Magna if you want to see a bad turning circle.

You mention plastic tank radiators being used by Holden & Jeep. To my knowledge about 98% of todays cars from all manufacturers use plastic tank type radiators. They are far more efficient than all metal radiators but do have a limited life. Having said that, their replacement cost is usually much less than an all metal radiator.

BTW, the earlier Jeeps with the Aisin (not Aisian) Warner transmissions are a better bet.

OK i made a few mistakes my wife finds our Jeep easier to park and manuvour then our VR so i figured its had a better turning circle. I always thought it was a Hemi and are regularly advertised as Hemi's by owners i should have looked into it more, but they are a very tuff and powerfull engine. I was close with the Aisin Warner it does sound like asian. But overall value for dollar for a 4WD that will actually go places they are a comfy and afordable, every car has there problems maybe i have been lucky i do try to keep my cars in good order maybe that helps. There are alot of people that hate Jeeps but never owned one and i think alot of people just hate them for no reason? Me comparing a Jeep to Holden is just examples im a holden man and love my commodores. My freinds drive Patrols and Toyota's and i do cop alot of stick about my jeep but my car has stayed with them and given them no reason, i even pulled one out of a washout on the beach. sorry for any mistakes on my behalf but i do love my jeep.

One thing that gives the impression of a tight turning circle is less overhang, which the Jeep has when compared to a Commodore.

The only good Jeep was built for the second world war. They peaked with the first model and it was down hill from there.

Buy a Toyota 4wd.

Buy a jeep and buy a good pair of walking shoes to throw in the back.
