I have bought an unregistered vehicle from someone in NSW and wish to get an unregistered vehicle permit to drive it back to SA. The vehicle was last registered in VIC.

Does it matter what state i get the permit from or do i need to get it from Vic Roads as thats where the vehicle was last registered?

Personally I'd be asking the RTA in NSW first

www.rta.nsw.gov.au

You may end up unlucky enough to need one for every state.

If the car is in NSW you have to get a roadworthy certificate before you can get a permit and the permit expires at the border.

If that's the case and I believe it is then you may be better going via Broken Hill to avoid Victoria.

I am buying the car from NSW (Albury/Wodonga) but as it was last registered in victoria wouldn't it make sense that i would have to get the permit from VIC Roads?

If you have to get a permit for every state that you drive through then from Wodonga avoiding NSW altogether is easy once you have left Albury. I'd be looking at a Vic permit and seeing if it usable in SA too.

This tells you all you need to know and the news is all good by the sound of it:

http://www.vicroads.vic....isteredVehiclePermit.htm

To get out of Albury al that you should need is a letter of intent stating that you will be driving the vehicle from [i]address in Albury [\i] to X in Wodonga to have repairs carried out for the purpose of a registration inspection. Make sure you have it booked in at say a tyre place in Wodonga though just in case the cops decide to check. You carry the letter with you in case the cops stop you.

At least this is what the NSW RTA have told me in the past.

Alternately you could have it towed to Wodonga then your backside is covered.
