Have a look at some of the good WB Statesmans being wrecked out on ebay and local wrecking yards. The cars are not rusted or crashed damaged, there only crime is they are worth more in bits. I have contacted many to ask what is wrong with the car that it is actually being wrecked and nine times out of ten the answer is the car is good but I can just make more from it parting it out. I pleaded with a guy on ebay a few years back to sell me a HZ SL/E (Olive on Beige ) he was wrecking on ebay as to save it from its fate. He had already sold the dash facia for $800 when I contacted him and he explained it was a one owner with all books no rust or any damage, all original (dash was uncut with original AM/FM radio and the cassette player in console) and 165,000 original K's and showed me photos (It was sweet). He wanted the drive train for a HJ coupe project which I actually offered the bits that he would need and to buy the car to which he didn't reply. I have two WB's, my Caprice that is being tidied up and a DeVille that was bought as a wrecker but is way too good to part out so it sits for a later project or my Son to have but both of these cars are worth more in bits than together but why do it?? These guys in my opinion should be strung up by the balls. If your passion is truly for the great cars that are here in Australia and the rest of the world how have guys in this field of interest been able to justify what they have done to these cars in the interest of making a buck and building there own car. A local wrecking yard was wrecking a gold HZ Caprice with fawn leather interior and factory fitted dunlop wire spoke wheels and no damage except where the wreckers had ripped out the dash for the factory air, this car looked like old Pop had parked it out side and was inside looking for another crochet pillow for the back seat, I couldn't believe it....shame shame shame

There should be a law against wrecking classics, for instance they should have to put up an advertisement asking if anyone would like to buy the full car. That really frustrates me.
I know how you feel about the HZ SL/E, I saw a genuine SLR 5000 Torana sitting in an old guys yard along with a HK monaro, an LJ Torana, an FB sedan, and more. All of them were complete but he refused to sell any of them, they had grass growing all around them and they're just going to sit there and rot. I'm so annoyed about that, someone could give those cars a good home..

If they were to sell it whole, then the next guy would simply come along & part it out as well. You can't stop human greed unfortunately.

30yrs ago i started buyn complete cars for parts coz individual bits were too dear. then sold/gave away leftovers to mates or wreckers & saw them still make heaps more.(then got too many mates)

so then i cut out th middle man.. no crime in that. it has been my sole income ever since

PS. a mate of mine is after a Left headlight for WB caprice. Will buy a pair if need be or even a whole front, & just part out th rest to cover costs

that car above is absolutely pure aussie muscle, it looks like it just rolled off the factory floor. Is that restored or original condition?? I agree with Silverfox any 68'HK GTS V8 takes the cake for me too.

I don't know what people see in the LJ, but I guess it's just my personal preference.
I dislike the tail lights on it.. Well, I pretty much dislike the whole back-end.
The opposite of the LJ goes for me with the WB,
I don't like the head lights, but again, just my opinion.

Yeah, I got nothing for the WB, but I am actually a Ford man even though I have 2 Holdens (but thats another story).

My favourite is any HQ with the HK monaro a very very close second. I also have a soft spot for the LJ.

Thanks for the comments. Yes it is mine.
Bought in 2006 at the top of the boom. I am very happy with it and it has a high profile in Monaro circles. As good as it looks in the photos.
I cannot take credit for its condition because that is basically how I bought it.
I did some work under the car as the previous two owners did not have a hoist so it is now well detailed underneath. I keep my eyes open for accurate parts and have a goal ot getting it as accurate as I can. Being a series two Brisbane car it is not as straight forward as say a Pagewood series one car when it comes to establishing true fact on exactly what bits are correct for this car. There is more info out there for S1.

One point I am trying to establish is which heaterbox is correct. Most series two (even original cars have the dark heaterbox in which you can see the f/glass chopped strands in the outer. Most series ones had the smooth light grey heaterbox....Perhaps material for a dedicated tech thread.

It's not the cars that are series 1 or series 2, to my knowledge there were just 2 different engines called type 1 & type 2 as designated by Holden. They were basically 68 & 69 model year US engines & easily identified by the alternator location. Other than associated gearbox & wiring harness mods I don't know of any other changes to the cars when this change took place, certainly not enough to create a series 2 model ID. You often here people talk about a series 2 HK 307 GTS, what would that entail ?

The exact time that this change took place was different for each plant as stocks of 68 (Type 1) engines were exhausted. Others on this site can quote the VINs when this happened but I understand it was in late 1968.

The black heater box change took place much later. AFAIK this change took place around March 1969 as stocks of the grey one ran out.

Lot of people also believe that the addition of the extra paint colors was the start of the "series 2" HK's. So an Ermine White and Inca Gold HK must be series 2.

Another urban myth, AFAIK these 2 colours were added to the palette in Jan 69 as part of a general HK update. This sort of thing happens just about every year, especially in those days.

The only thing 'series 2' about Ermine White & Inca Gold (on GTS models) is that because they are 69 build, meaning that if they were GTS 327 models they must have had Type 2 engines, because the engine change happened before the colour intro.

The strange thing is, this is a real hard question to answer, because I reckon it changes - did foe me. Back in the day, I loved my grandad's HQ Premier 253 auto in Phantom Grey I with Calypso red interior. Way cool. Then I got to drive the sucker when I was 17, in about 1982, and a Leyland P76 was a better car to drive, out of the box. The HQ was a wallowing, understeering and gutless pig. When the WB came out, it was (for me) all about the Commodore... the WB was so, just last decade. If I won Lotto in 1982, it would've been a VH SS or SL/E I bought, never would I have thought about a WB, even a Magnum.
Now an old fart, with nostalgia sniffing at my corn-festered heels, I love the HQ-WB era, and it's the WB that I reckon was the best sorted (if the most bloody underpowered!!!) of the series, and still the most affordable.
