Hello fellow Fastlaners, Happy new year to all. Well now i have a 308 with a th350 in a vh commodore. What i,m curious about is that the engine number is VT3612xx date code 4M4 which i was lead to believe is a trimatic block. Could someone shed some light on this for me please. Thanks cheers Garry

M40 Trimatic replaced the M38 TH350 around 11/81 so if the VH is prior to that it should be TH350. By my records (slim in this era) that engine number belongs in an approx late 82 to early 83 car. 4M4 is 4/12/74 or possibly 4/12/84, however late 1984 or early 1985 engines should be around 490000-500000. My guess is it is a 12/74 block restamped with another number (or a 12/84 restamped). A photo of the number would answer all questions. This would explain the TH350 behind it. BUT, a 12/74 or 12/84 trimatic block can be redrilled to TH pattern or the box may be modified to fit a trimatic block.
Does the block have 308 cast on both sides or just one? This should solve the 1974 or 1984 issue.

Thanks for your help HK and i reckon you've got it in one. The car is a 6/83 5l trimatic SL ex cop car (L31,M40,GU4) but has been fitted with a TH350 and a 9 inch at some stage. The block has 308 on the left side only. So as you said, prob 12/74 block with 6/83 number. Had me stuffed so thanks again.

I'm pretty sure a late 1984 black motor has 308 on both sides, so I'm pretty sure it has been nailed ie a 1974 red block with restamped number.
