I have a problem loosening the nut on the drop steering link on my 1975 hj holden kingswood with manual steering. It loosens for 1 turn then goes tight. Ive tried a long purchase bar, but it wont budge, the nut is about 1 and a half inches long with a grease nipple on the end. Any ideas on how I can get it off to replace bushes?

Do you mean the idler arm? Is it on the passenger's side of the car? If so, what you need to do is to remove the two bolts that attatch the upper part to the sub frame. You need to use a socket with extension bar (through the hole in the sub frame) to hold the bolt head while you undo the nuts. Having done that, the upper part of the idler arm then unscrews from the nut part that is screwed into the track rod. You can then remove the nut section. To replace the bushes as you called it, you need to replace the idler arm as a unit. Fitting is the reversal of removal. Fit the nut section first, then screw the other part into the nut until tight and then back it off 3/4 of a turn. I hope this helps.

Spot on Dr Ric, except for how you've named some of the parts.
What Alex is replacing is the idler arm 'support & bush'. The piece that the bush screws into is the actual idler arm itself & does not get replaced.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0 |
