so i need to buy a new car
it must have atleast 6 seats, i don't care what brand, i would like something less than 10 years old or new
can anyone offer any advice on what to buy?
i've always hated people movers and town 4WD's but maybe it's time to change
(mods if you think this thread should be in the pub section then fell free to move it)

Do any of the dual cab utes have bench front? That would give you 6 seats, towing, load carry, with a canopy it is covered etc. |

Someone mentioned the territory in your other thread. That would be my pick of the under 10 year olds that are still a decent car, and relatively inexpensive to maintain as they age. The 2wd versions are just like a jacked up Falcon wagon - you can't go wrong.
Your other options are all crappy asian-made van or soft-roader 4wd type things, or a step up to a full-size 4wd like a prado/cruiser or patrol. All of them are expensive to buy, expensive to fix, and under-performers when it comes to power under the bonnet, and then there's the fuel consumption.... |

what i'm finding is anything with a bench seat is rare or doesn't exist anymore, i've just been on fords web site and going thru there option lists, there is no mention of a bench seat at all, so has ford even dropped the bench seat?
i don't need a ute, i already have a HQ tonner, but i like the idea, thanks
what about a 5ish year old 7 seater territory? are the any good?
torago's have a good reputation might be worth a look too maybe?

my thoughts exactly!! i don't like the things, i'd be happy with a 6 seat sedan (any make), they are rare, so rare i haven't seen a less than 10yr old 1 for sale yet! which makes me think maybe the bench seat died out somewhere around 2000??? i will add the territory to the look at list

what gets me is i think you can buy base model ute from ford with a bench seat and colum change, how easy would it be to carry over to sedan and wagons

A guy at work got a chrysler voyager ...and wished he hadn`t a lot of mechanics didnt want to touch it so they over priced the work ,things were to hard to get to.

Kluger are a nice car but what put me off is the v6 all wheel drive mounted east/west nasty when time comes to work on, if they put the engine around the right way, if you plan on fixing it your self??? well

How much are you trying to spend?
My Brother in Law just got a used Territory with about 100k on the clock. AWD Ghia 7 seater for about 18k. It's good but it drives like a truck (bodyroll) and chews the juice when you're not being careful.
We just bought a Jap Spec imported Tarago (Estima). Got a few features that weren't available here like V6, AWD, Full sunroofs, electric doors. Paid 16k and it had 18 inch wheels and a Pioneer DVD/Satnav system ($1800 worth) recently fitted. It's awesome having the extra space. Kids can jump in and out easy, the 3rd row of seats is useable for adults and I can jump in the back and watch movies with kids while the wife drives on long trips. Drives like a car, except you're sitting more upright which I find more comfortable anyway. Haven't suffered fatigue in this one at all, even after driving Brisbane to Canberra by myself.
Klugers seem to be worth a lot of money. My BIL considered them but couldn't find a remotely cheap one in good nick.

be very careful when buying a Jap import, i recently looked at an 8 seat "nissan elgrand" (google it!) and after doing some digging it turns out DOTARS would only allow these vehicles to be imported as a 5 seat campervan (which these things were originally in Japan with sink/fridge etc in the rear) and as a result the third row of seating (fitted in australia with an engineers for the construction of the seating, removal of all camping crap to fit them) is NOT legal to carry 8 passengers. I was told it was "impossible" to reregister as an 8 seater, to pass a rwc the third row had to be removed and no engineer i spoke to would touch it. (it was registered and came with a RWC from the yard) funnily enough, the car yard knew all this but failed to mention it the first two times i spoke to them in the yard and later admitted to being "caught out" by the wholesaler he bought the car from for exactly the same reasons i listed. this was after i went in a thrid time to call the guy nasty names for wasting my f***ing time (after all, i already own a f***ing 5 seat vehicle and he knew what i was looking for) long boring story, the point is to make sure anything you look at with more than 5 seats, make damn sure the seats are actually legally allowed to be used. steer clear of the 09 or earlier territory's, ball joints are are a common issue, as in they fall out while turning (this has been supposably rectified, but our local dealer sends all of his trade ins to melb, wouldn't sell us one), I worked at DSI who built the gearboxes & I know how badly built they are & there are no new parts being made for them as of feb 2011, the chassis are also very prone to rust due to poor drain hole locations & stone deflectors that collect mud & debris.
Im not bagging out the territory, I actually like it & would of purchased one, but with these faults, especially the ball joint issue, ill be waiting till the 2010 models drop in price. |

haven't been to the bank yet, but were looking at spending $20,000-$30,000 were very keen on the kluger, there ticking all the boxes, only thing were found is they hold there value very well!!!

Interesting info there greenhj. Are the Elgrands only a 5 seater in Japan then? My Estima was brought in as a "Campervan" and registered as a 2 seater. Then the factory rear seats were put back in and QLD mod plated to change capacity to 7 seats. I've since changed rego from QLD to ACT with no problems.
I did have one guy trying to talk me into an Elgrand stating that they were heaps cheaper and had a turbocharger. Told him that if I wanted to drive a housebrick I'd be out shopping for a Volvo. Good thing about the Estima is that most parts are the same as the Aussie Tarago's and the V6 ones share drivelines with the Camry and Avalon so plenty of engine parts available too. Would hate to have to find Elgrand parts in Australia.
