1960's GM in Australian history stuff

Anyone interested in our Aussie built Chev, pontiac, buick, mainly from the 60's on.
There is bugger all info on them i can find.
It would be good to know the history and photos of them and the difference between the USA and Aussie built ones.
A mate had a 1968 impala and looking back it must of been the bees knees back in it's day.
Imagine say in 1967 going to a dealer and having a choice of HR holden's and a 1967 impala or a pontiac, i think bring home one of the big ones would be great.
Would you want a brougham or a pontiac or impala in 1968. i think the big ones were like twice the price of a brougham.

Both of Norm Darwin's books, 'History of Holden Since 1917' & '100 Years of GM in Australia' have lots of good info on the Australia assembled Chevs & Pontiacs.
The 1917 book is now out of print, but I believe that he still has few copies of the 100 Year book left.

Yes Norm Darwin" History of Holden" a Very good start.
GM H Pagewood assembled the Chevs & Pontiacs .
Some if you look carefully will have HOLDEN tags.
They were assembled from CKD kits with some local content.
Have been told by ex GM H Employees of how amazed they were to
see these massive cars on the assembly loops adjacent
smaller Local Holden s.

I own a Aussie built 66 pontiac parisienne sport sedan mine was the 2nd one built in 66 body # 2

I believe ALL Chevs & Pontiacs assembled here by GM-H will have Holden Body ID plates. Canadian or US cars will have Canadian or US plates respectively. Dr Terry |

Not just Pagewood either. Acacia Ridge, Dandenong and Elizabeth assembled them too. |

Bedford trucks as well had the GMH plates.

Aust. assembled Vauxhalls as well, in fact any body built by GM-H will have a Holden Body ID plate. Pre-WWII Buicks & some other non-GM product (e.g. Dodge) would also be on the list. Anyone know of any others ? Dr Terry |

Somewhere I've got a copy of the brouchure for the aust production '67 Impala. And some copies of road tests.
Apart from useing Chev running gear in the Pontiacs, there were some other differences too. Off the top of my head
"Our" 63 Belairs had the Impala rear treatment ( 6 lights- not 4)
and 'our' 67 Impalas used a Caprice rear bumper.
Dunno why. |

64 onward pontiacs had impala dashes, early 60`s- 63 chev had laurentian dash, also Australian Parisiennes had chev chassis not the wider pontiac chassis used in the states and chev motors which canadian models also used this is why some call them chevy-acs! The GMC Ambulances (as well as Holden Suburbans) had GMH ID plates on them. |

I believe those plates are not the same. Only vehicles built in Australia by GM-H will have the 'normal' Body ID plate that we are familiar with. Weren't the GMC ambulances a full import? The Suburbans certainly were. I think the C20 & C20 Chevs from the late 70s had full GM-H plates, as they were assembled here, not imported. The GM-H body ID plates are normally the ones with info on Model No., Body No., Trim No. Paint No. etc. Other full import Holdens like TR & TS Astra & SB & XC Barinas all have an Opel Body ID plate as well as a Holden serial no. plate. This number is used for tracking warranty etc. Are these the same as the GMC & Suburbans you're talkng about. Dr Terry |

GMH/Holden ADR plate is what I have seen on the GMC's. The C20/C30/K20's had from memory GMH BODY plates with no lion on them plus VIN and ADR plate. I think they had a Chev plate on them as well. |

That sounds correct now.
ALL cars sold here by GM-H, whether locally built or full imports must have an ADR Compliance plate (since 1/1/70 anyway), but only cars built here get a GM-H body plate.
A mate of mine has 2 1956 Chevs, the one built here (a 4-door sedan) has a GM-H body plate, but the other (a Canadian RHD hardtop) has a GM Canada body ID plate.

My Pagewood built '57 had a GMH BODY plate, I have a photo somewhere. |

I am reading great ideas in motion a history of Chrysler in Australia 1946-81 it,s a bit all over the place and i am happy i did not buy it.
It would be much better if it was set up more like Terry book 60 years of holden, jolly good job old son.
Looking forward to reading a ford book with all the aussie built fords.

[/quote] Family member had orig 66-67 -Parisienne , yep with Chevrolet engine . Two tone, Burgundy body & white roof .Had What I now think were after thought [ for ADR compliace ?]Turn indicators on rear.
