Hi guys,

I need some help with paint colour.

As some of you know, I am building a Sandman ute replica.

Trying to decide on the right paint colour, but want to stay as much as I can as factory original.

Anyone know if the HQ Sandman Ute came out in yellow?

This is my favourite colour and I am hoping that it did. Otherwise the next choice is LettuceAlone.

Greens nice............but Yellow is better!

Get hold of colour charts A621 or A622. HQ Sandman was available in all the colours on this chart. Late HQ examples could be had in most HJ colours off A624 or A625 too.

Chrome yellow is the 1974 HQ yellow. I saw pictures of an Azure blue HQ Sandman today http://www.mysandman.com...p/3005-Anyone-know-this and it looks fantastic. My personal favourites on a HQ Sandman are Orchid, Saffron or Sunburst but most look OK, probably the only ones I don't like are Barbados Green or Covert.

Thanks HK1837.

Yellow it is then.

Appreciate it.

Another question,

Did the Sandman logo on the back tailgate also come out in the later HQ's?

HQ and HJ were all the same stripes and side logos, but none of them were factory fitted. They were supplied with the car for dealer fitment and the buyer decided if they wanted them of not. So as far as "factory original" is concerned, HQ and HJ should have no stripes or logo and they should be in a cardboard box inside the vehicle!

It ain't and one quick look, can tell by those stripes it's a mockup, they're wrong.

It's a 1972 HQ Panelvan XBL474
VIN/Chassis Number CHQ31061M
Engine Number QL26288
Colour BLUE
Make HOLDEN
Body Type PANEL VAN
Compliance Plate Date 1972/02
Year Of Manufacture 1972

And that matters why? Question was about colour for a replica, which one would assume would use replica stripes. It also has wider rear rims and clear front indicators which also have no bearing upon how good the colour looks.

Thanks to all of you.

That panelvan looks funny. There is something not right with those stripes. What I find funny though, it still has the belmont badge and original front grill.

If you are going to go to the effort to do a mock one, I would do it right. Just my thoughts. In saying that, I would quite happily take the guards off him.

Thanks HK1837,

I didn't know the sticker were in a box and put on by the new owner if they wish. So would it be safe to assume that the big Sandman logo on the back tailgate would of been in the box also?

Not owner fitted, dealer fitted.
HQ and HJ had no big Sandman logo on the tailgate, just a stripe and badge(s).

Not sure what you mean by the blue car having Belmont badges. All HQ Sandmans had either Belmont or Kingswood badges on their guards.

Thanks HK, that answers everything.

That seems a bit odd that there was still Belmont or Kingswood badges on the guards.

Looks like I am going GTS Chrome Yellow with this sticker kit.

Just got to track down some guards and then I am set.

Why would it be odd that there was Kingswood or Belmont badges? That is what they were. Belmont and Kingswood are luxury levels, Sandman is a special vehicle package. Similar to Thunder in VE.

It wasn't a comment on colour, colour is a personal choice,
Green is nice, I like Green.

The reply was this for this comment in that link you gave,

"Is that how the car looks today? It would be a great car to put on the jacket of the Sandman book. I don't think I have seen a nicer representation of a Sandman."

If thats how you think a sandman should be represented, i don't think many people would buy a book.

Could titled it "Spotlight on Holden Sandman"

Why ?
because they should've put the Sandman logo there !

How odd would a SS look with Belmont badge on the front guard if you put one there today.

The SS is a special vehicle package and NO belmont badge to been seen.

Belmont badges do look odd on a sandman, but were there.

Fair call on the errors on the car, still a lovely colour and looks very nice. And it is still a representation of a HQ Sandman. And the colour looks fantastic (in my opinion) as stated. You rarely see them today in any condition. You obviously are a very well resourced person that loves to hide in anonimity. Good luck with that.

Disagree. Many special vehicle packages retain some identity of the original vehicle. XU-1, XU2, A9X, BO6, B02, A8J, XW4 to name a few. XV2, XV4 and XW8 were exceptions. Maybe only for marketing purposes. Hmmm, I seem to recall some other anonymous user here tagging these as Selmonts and Mingswoods or something like that....

Thanks guys.

I just find it odd, thats all. Thats one thing I am not doing is putting a kingswood or belmont badge on it. It is going to look pretty sweet when I'm done.

While we are on the subject, and probably a stupid question, but what is the differences to a belmont to a Kingswood?

Wern't all those cars mentioned HQ SS, HQ 2 & 4 door GTS350 adorned with stickers from the factory instead of the badges. The SLR5000 didnt have the SL/R badge on the back. They were not optional.

The HQ Sandman left the factory without stickers. Why wouldnt it have its badges? It would of been naked otherwise! Couldnt see the dealers removing them and filling in the holes.

In the HQ series the differences are mainly cosmetic.

Apart from the obvious badge differences, the Belmont has less stainless mouldings than the Kingswood.

Inside, the seat & door trims on the Belmont are more plain, the Belmont gets black rubber flooring where the Kingswood is coloured. The Kingswood gets front door armrests & courtesy light switches & also a cigarette lighter. Drivetrain & other equipment is essentially the same.

The Belmont was basically the fleet or stripper version.

Thinking about the Belmont/Kingswood badges on HQ/HJ Sandmans for a moment, these cars perhaps the only models where factory designed decals were dealer-fitted.

So I suppose they are the exception to the rule.

Also on HQ and HJ Sandman didn't change the luxury level of the base vehicle. On HX and HZ it did (it basically turned them into Kingswoods) thus lost the HOLDEN badges (or they were in the way of the stripes!).
