Hey I have a HG belmont panelvan with a 202 in it, the guy i bought it from said there was only about 200 made with the 202 in late 71 before they changed over too the HQ commercials. Can anybody shed any more light on this? Another bloke at Big Al's poker run this year told me there was only 5 panelvans made with 202s but that sounds ridiculous too me.

Thanks

All HG utes and vans built after a certain date close to HQ engine release (around 5/71-6/71, unsure of exact timeframe due to plants using up 161/186 engine stock) up to HQ commercial production (around 10/71, 11/71 release) had 173 or 202 so there would be significantly more than you'd think. Not sure if 253 was available after 6/71, as far as I know none have turned up yet.

I'm with HK1837, the number will be higher than you think.

If we assume that ute/van production fitted with 173/202 was around 3 months (could have been more), this equates to 1/4 of a year's production. In those days, the number of utes & vans sold was high, around 10,000 vans & 25,000 utes per year as an estimate. That would mean around 2,500 vans & 6,000 utes would have been built with the newer engines.

Any comments or further 'guestimates' ??

These boxes are not all that much different to look at internally (apart from teeth counts), as I suspect the HT V8 3spd isn't that much different to look at to the 6cyl box (and later V8 box). I can't say i've ever looked inside a HT V8 3spd box before, or at least remember doing so.
All Aussie 3 and 4 sp box would have the same rating as they have the same layshaft. just like all HQ 10 bolt would be the same rating regardless of ratio.

As for the HT box's in ute and p vans me thinks the Opel 4sp box does not come in them at all but that there is a saginaw 4 sp called M22 for the 6 cyl and it maybe smaller then the V8 M21 saginaw ?

In the USA they have a 3 sp box just like the V8 saginaw and it's the same story as done to our aussie box to convert it to 3 sp.

I hated them 3 on the tree rubbish and all aussie box are weak even behind a stock 202.

We had the aussie 3 sp in the HT for the 253 and to do 308 would no be a problem at all as the box is just as weak as a M21..
The V8 3sp aussie box has a 2.48 1st gear.

Correct, there were no Opels fitted to HK/T/G commercials, but the M22 Saginaw used was just a wider ratio version of the M21 Saginaw, same in size, appearance & strength. Just as the M20/M21/M22 Aussie boxes are just ratio variations of the same basic gearbox.

AFAIK the 1st gear ratio of a normal Aussie V8 M21 is 2.54.

Here's a pic of a nice HT/G panelvan.
Pic was taken at Surfers Paridise drags, around late 70's

That would be very unlikely to be a 4spd. Ordering procedure had buckets as mandatory in a HG commercial with 4spd (and only with V8 as well), and this was a bench seat car. However you couldn't order 14A trim either according to HG release ordering prcoedure, but it was made available later in HG.

Greetings, And as previously stated it left Dandenong plant with either a 202 and column shift manual or Trimatic automatic. If it now has anything else then someone has done the swap at some point after it was built. The HQ colour is normal for the time of build.

look out, the guru is coming through...

Greetings, Blue trim in Belmonts was added during the HG run in 1970 after release.

Yes I know, thanks for the timeframe though. I was just pointing out that the release HG ordering procedure showed it as not available just like it shows 4spd on HG 6cyl commercial not being available. Thus in order to state categorically Joe Public couldn't order a 4spd 6cyl HG commercial you'd need to look at every update of the ordering procedure, to be certain there wasn't a period it was (like 14A). I'd just about bet there was no time you could easily get one though and in any case this one with 14A trim has to be a bench seat car, buckets would show 14B.

Engine can't be original as that was originally a 6cyl van. For it to have been a 253 its model code would be 0270.

My neighbour has a light green HG Belmont van that has sat rusting in his backyard for over 20yrs. Same old story, he says he will get going again some day. It is a factory 253 V8 4 Speed Saginaw with correct factory pressed floor to match. Very straight but rear floors need a fair amount of rust work. Still restorable but is it rare enough to bother with?
