Hi Les.
I have just purchased on of your recently released HK GTS Muffler Assemblies, P/N H1246. It's good to see that you have done these and they are readily available. Whilst it looks like a great product, I'd like to point out a few things.
1. I bought two new mufflers from Holden Dealers in about '86. The original muffler was silver, you have painted yours flat black. I'm putting mine on an old Ute, so I don't care too much about the colour. Someone who's angling at Factory Authentic might think that this repro should be the original silver colour. I have a photo of one of the mufflers I bought (from Mantello motors from memory) but am having difficulty finding it at the moment.
2. The inlet pipes have not been slotted, but they are in the genuine item. The slots are, of course, necessary for clamping.
3. There is just a hole for the bolt that secures the muffler to the Hangers. It was a welded-in nut in the original muffler.
4. I also purchased a pair of new Tips back in the '80's. I'm about 90% sure that the painted section was gloss black, not matt black as yours are.

Haven't fitted mine as yet, but I'm interested to see how the sound compares to the original muffler that I have on another car.

Hi Bob,
Thanks for your post and constructive comments.
We have checked through the points your raised.
1. The sample we used for the manufacture of the mufflers was loaned to us by a Monaro enthusiast. It is a genuine GMH muffler (one of five the guy has) and still had the part number tag attached, it (and the other four) are all painted the same colour and it is on that colour we based the colour of the mufflers we have made.
2.You are correct.
The pre-production sample we received from the factory had all pipes slotted but the production items did not.
Unfortunately we did not pick up on that.
Future production will have all pipes slotted.
3. Ditto as above
4. The research we did indicated the tips were a satin black at best so had them painted to match the muffler. Should this not be the case subsequent production can be amended however we would need to see firm evidence of an alternate sheen level.

I hope this in part provides an explanation.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your reply. I understand the problem of production items being different to pre-production, I've experienced the same myself.

Still can't find my photo of the mufler I purchased way back when, but found a lot of other crap i'd forgotten about. Included in that was the receipt from Mantello Holden for that muffler. I bought it on 30/10/84 for the princely sum of $73.15 plus sales tax. Of interest is the part number on the receipt, 2809468. The HK (blue) Parts Book shows the P/N for a HK 327 muffler as 7449073. Maybe there were changes along the way, including the colour.

And you're probably right about the tips, they were probably satin.

Hi,
Les is currently away.
I thought he might have logged in at some stage to respond however I am happy to work through the issues you have with you.
The mufflers were made to an original sample and the production samples were fitted to three different cars before being approved.
To date we have sold around 20 with no reports of any problems other than yours.
Is it possible the problem could be with the pipe going into the muffler rather than the muffler inlet itself being at the wrong angle?
Is the pipe where the problem is a genuine pipe (unlikely I would think) or an aftermarket replacement?
It is possible the muffler has been incorrectly assembled, which I am happy to check if you could return it to where ever you bought it so they can get it back to us.
I can then compare it to the others we have in stock.

Dave,
The guy who did my pipes commented that there was an issue with one of the inlet pipes too. He's fitted a genuine for me in the past, so he should have some idea of what he's doing. Also found that one side hangs down about 15mm lower than the other. Don't know if 69 rust bucket has found the same. Not sure what has caused that, but I'm not too worried about it.

I will do some further checking when I get back to work on Tuesday.
Hopefully that will give us a clearer picture as to where the problem lies.
I do know however we went to the trouble of making and supplying a test jig to the factory against which all prototype and production mufflers were supposed to be checked.
On another point can you please expand on your comment re "your Sterling/Humex mufflers"?
I am not familiar with either brand and as a general statement we don't have too many mufflers in our range, I think off the top of my head, and I stand to be corrected, only the XU-1 and Monaro ones.

also check the mounting bracket as amunro327 said its not lower but the brackets are different sizes one is 45mm the other 54mm making the muffler sit offset

plus they have only been on sale for a few weeks/months really, the fitter was probably thinking of the old ebay reproductions, not the rares version

Hi all,
I'm sorry to say that after a random test of the mufflers we still have in stock, in spite of having supplied the factory a jig to test the mufflers on we have found there is a variance in the mufflers checked to the jig we have here.
We will do a full stock check tomorrow and hopefully will find at least some that fit the jig properly.
As soon as I know more I will get back to you and sort out a change over (given we get some that fit from those we check).

gday dave thanks for your quick response the labour and time is payed for by me unfortunately it was done twice the tips I'm more than happy with the only out come would be a refund for the muffler to pay for the replacement that would settle things up i'll call tuesday

Hi Dave,
I've managed to jig the exhaust system around a bit on mine to overcome the "fit" issues with the muffler. One thing I don't like about it is the sound. I know the resonators I'm using are not stock, but I find the exhaust note to be quite "tinny". Are these mufflers fibre filled or just an open chamber?

refund given by rare spares. and alex the owners name is mark great guy at settlement exhaust centre ph 0394663971 tell him apollo deluxe sent you he also does intermediate pipes too .he's looking for some original front engine pipes if anyone can help out. the muffler he makes in house has a bank for each side giving it a nice even sound not a mixed muffled sound as compared to the one i replaced.
