nead to no if all hr premiers had power assist steering or optional??

I'm just about certain it was optional, as far as I remember HK Brougham was the first Holden to get power steer as standard.

Yes, only optional on EH, HD & HR & quite rare.

Maybe so, but you need to know 2 things.

1. Power steering was an expensive & complex option back then & not many in the 60s could afford such luxuries.

2. With 6.50 x 13 crossply tyres fitted (as they came from the factory) the steering effort was quite low anyway. It is much higher if 6-inch rims & modern radial tyres are fitted.

Also people did not want it. Armstrong steering was fine. I know lots of people that would "never" have these new fandancled things, like automatic, power steering, air conditioning, disc brakes, ABS, cruise control etc.

I fitted power steering to my HZ, that my father in law purchased new, he was amazed that I had engineered it up. I told him it was optional. He then wanted to know why the salesman did not tell him about, the answer was 1) you were buying a Kingswood not a Premier and 2) you would have more than likely not wanted it as most did not "trust" it.

I can remember my first ride in an automatic, an EK. I was watching for the gear lever to move as it automatically changed gear.

a mate of mine in the late 70,s
had a eh prem,factory power steering.
he took it off,put a chev in it.
all went to the tip...
l also had 2 eh clock dashes but that is another story.....
history.....

to the tip??damm haha.im trying to find a set up at the moment if anyone can help.driving it aint to bad but reversing in tight spaces is a total pain in the arse hey.i had a hr around 13 years ago and i cant remember it being anywhere near as bad.so if any can help with info on a place that might have a power assist steering set up let me no fellers.cheers,shaneo.

If you are not after originality then go rack an pinion conversion. The standard power assisted is not very driver friendly at high speeds, the centralising adjusting nut can unwind sending the car into an uncontrolled left hand steer and to get the drag link arm with the valve and cylinder mount in it to suit a HR would be very hard and expensive. I have converted an E J but I had the original drag link, valve and cylinder ram the rest I was able to use from other models, pump HQ - WB, bracket HQ - WB VB - VH, Chassis cylinder mounting bracket was made up as were the hoses. This cost (I was doing it for somebody else) about $1500 and that was a few years back and as mentioned it is a s*** set up only good if you want originality.

Check your wheel alignment, tyre pressure etc

I've looked into getting power assist for my HT but can only get a rack and pinion which I would be very happy with, would be a huge improvement on the current steering set up

No, not as such. Unlike the later factory-fitted options, the EJ system was only sold as a dealer-fitted accessory. It came as a Nasco kit with all the instructions etc.

It was quite rare.

Power assisted steering is its correct name. All power steering systems whether they be of the old ram & valve type, integral box style, power rack & pinion or the new modern electric drive type are all 'power assisted'. Also as davo has said, the old ram & valve type still used a normal style mechanical box, although in HK/HT/HG power steer cars got the heavier (more direct) GTS 16:1 box.

In other words you always have a direct mechanical connection between the steering wheel & the tyres, but the power steering system 'assists' by reducing the necessary input effort.

Power brakes are also usually 'power assisted'.
