I'm looking for a HEI ignition system for my 186 red engine which would consist of electronic distributor, coil, ignition module & leads. Anyone know of a decent brand that is not going to cost me a $1000?

Not knowing anything about ignition systems, I haven't heard of a stock blue motor HEI. More information would be greatly appreciated, can you buy them new as I'm not really interested in buying used.

Perhaps grab one from a wreck.
I have one on a red 202 with black head & injection & it's fine.
I did have it looked at & bench tested by a distributor repairer prior to fitting.
But she's been good.
Set & forget.

No longer keen to deal with wreckers, I'm finding that they charge like wounded bulls (unfortunately, having a HT everyone wants to charge top dollar for parts because of the Monaro's) and you really don't know the condition of what your getting. Would prefer to buy a new HEI ignition system from a reputed brand that comes with a warranty

I've used a few of the blue motor elec. dizzys. Put a new module on it, modify the wiring so you get 12v all the time, replace the plastic gear with a metal one from an ordinary dizzy and away you go.

I run one in my EH racer. Never a problem, we pin the pick-up module onto the shaft so that it can't spin loose. Use a good coil and shouldn't be a problem. My engine goes to 7000 rpm cleanly before valve bounce.
