Was listening to ABC Radio a few weeks ago and saw a show on SBS tonight and I've been thinking about its relevance for repro parts.
The TV doco showed a complete dashboard being made using the process.
I had a look on Youtube at 3D printing and there were several I can see the day when you could take a sample bit to your local 3D printing shop and get it reproduced.
More complex parts, including metal parts, could also be remade using the process for tooling slashing the cost of making master tools.
Huge possibilities?
Cheers. Nick.

Hi Nick
This is nothing new, We use this at work, It's called CAD/CAM From our design office - the prototype is drawn up with a three dimensional program called Autocad and we use another called Solidworks which will give a forth dimension. From this design process a program for the machining centre (milling machine or lathe) can be programmed, and all cutting tooling loaded into the automatic tool changer. Once the memory stick with program is inserted and blank steel, aluminium, or whatever is bolted down on the machining bed, it's press the go button. Our milling machine centre will also cut the forth dimension with secondary machining head. The Engineering Exhibition at Darling Harbour is coming up next month, take a look there to see all this simply majic stuff in operation. It's truely a worth while visit.

as above^^ it's fantastic stuff!!! and defiantly not new
my mate just bought i 3D printer and is printing stuff at home with plastic (rerap), at work we've been printing stuff for years (rapid prototyping) we print patterns which are used to make castings, we also do 3D engraving, it's fascinating to watch
if you've never seen it then jump onto youtube NOW and search for 3D printing, i've been working with this stuff for 3 years now and known about it for over 10 years, the price has dropped a MASSIVE amount and is very affordable now, it's something that will be used more in the future for sure

When I joined TAFE in 1991, Partec was a small part of Mt Gravatt TAFE and they had one.

Hi Ozchevy
Yes CAD CAM is amazing. The process I saw the other night is different to computer driven machining in that it uses the same process to 3D printing but using steel or stainless steel as the medium. The bonded metal is relatively hollow with roughly 60% air "bubbles" through it. It is then filled with brass which ends up with the finished product. Most interesting to watch. Basically the opposite principal to starting with a billet and machining material away.
There must be a future for repro parts with this process.
Cheers Nick.

Cool, can I order a HG "Monaro GTS 350" Coupe to go... |

Not such a crazy suggestion. I've been following this kind of stuff for a while now, and while the process is nothing new the accessibility for the average person is. You could pick up a brand new Makerbot 3D printer for much less than a grand, and providing you are proficient with CAD the possibilities are almost limitless, especially for working on cars that no new parts exist for. Slammed that seat-belt retainer in the door? Print out another one. Can't find the speedo gear with the correct ratio? Design and print it yourself. No tooling required, just a computer, a printer and your free time. Watch this space, this kind of easily accessible tech is in the process of changing the rapid prototyping and manufacturing industries as we type, and it is starting to filter down into peoples daily lives. Very cool stuff.

Its pretty cool. My mate owns a 3D printer, and can print out up to 300Hx300Wx300D "images" in plastic. Its the perfect tool for doing new products because you dont have the tooling costs associated with getting parts made.
I am a designer/drafter by trade so I use 3D design packages all day, so I can use this device to print out a bracket, bolt it up in my car and make sure the geometry works before getting it fabricated in steel.

I dont see how some someone hasnt mass produced badges and simply gave the property owners a cut to shut them up simply cos they are too lazy themselves to do it

haha, no worries :-) don't forget before you drive it you'll need to print yourself some petrol

Printing petrol would be the go! Petrol in my area is going up to $1.70 WTF!!! Hey you reckon I could print myself a hot babe as well Lol |

Seems to be some confusion between CNC machining solid material using computer generated renderings/programming and the "3D printing" which is powder form processed by a print head and bonded through high temperature? |

HQforme, i get what your saying, but 3D printing is more then just printed powder these days, my mates printer prints plastic, it feeds in PLA or ABS plastic wire (like welding wire) the printer head melts it and feeds it out and prints it in ANY 3D shape
i've seen other printers print out wax to be used in investment casting
there is also a foundry printing out sand moulds, the clip i seen they printed out a engine block mould, the say the cast blocks are accurate to within 0.5mm!!!, usually a sand cast engine block it accurate within 3mm the 3D printer we use at work is a rapid prototype, it prints with powder
the future of 3D printing is MASSIVE!!! the cost of the machines are huge and they are quite slow ATM, but this IS changing

here is the printed sand mould clip (there making a engine block), the sand is grey because of the resin injected into the sand to bond it together http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8MaVaqNr3U
here is a 3D printer printing ABS plastic http://www.youtube.com/w...w-s8XTY&feature=related
